The media reported that Melania Trump has had fewer public appearances to date this year as the First Lady of the United States of America and her relationship with President Donald Trump has been less public in the past.
Melania Trump has appeared in public around 14 to 16 times so far this year, journalist Joanna Coles said. Coles described the First Lady's lack of visibility as a “vanishing act” and said she found her absence from several high-profile events unusual.
Melania has been seen on major occasions, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup final and Fourth of July celebrations. But she was supposedly absent when President Trump traveled to China, and did not go to Donald Trump Jr's wedding.
The low profile has raised questions about whether the First Lady is deliberately keeping a lower profile.
Melania's publicist Dylan Thomas Cotter suggested that Melania may be trying to distance herself from her husband, while maintaining her own public image.
“The public, in a first for the United States, is witnessing a First Lady who is strategically positioning and publicizing herself while also distancing herself from the very man tasked with governing this country,” Cotter told The Irish Star.
He said it is an extreme departure from the traditional political image of a First Lady standing by her husband at most big events.
Cotter said the First Lady's role has traditionally been to be closely associated with the president's image. Melania's more selective appearances may be different in that regard.
The publicist also said the political climate in the Trump administration may influence the way the First Lady presents herself publicly. He said in this age of personal branding, political power and public service, it’s a matter of public service more so than it has ever been in American politics.
Cotter conceded that Melania’s reduced visibility could have multiple reasons and warned that it was not clear if she had voluntarily decided to step back or whether other factors had influenced her public schedule.
The speculation comes after Coles and author Michael Wolff discussed Melania Trump's public presence and marriage on The Daily Beast's *Inside Trump's Head* podcast.
Coles said Melania had been seen only a few times during the year and that her appearance at the World Cup final had attracted particular attention because of her otherwise low profile.
She also noted that Melania had attended UFC events, Fourth of July fireworks celebrations and the World Cup final, but she estimated that her total number of public appearances for the year remained between 14 and 16.
Melania has a more private public profile than many former First Ladies have. Her selective appearances and independent public activities have been particularly popular in periods when President Trump has been in a very busy political life.
There is no indication from Melania Trump or her office that she is intentionally distancing herself from the President. Her absence from individual events doesn’t mean she has lost her role as a friend or the President in any way.
The conversation illustrates a continuing interest in Melania Trump’s role as First Lady, given her husband has become a demanding political figure and still one of the world’s most followed political figures.
