A deep-seated sense of shock is gripping a tight-knit West Michigan community following a devastating event that has rocked a community. Eight people—two adults and six children—were found dead in a burning house in Grand Haven Township and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is looking for possible reasons of what investigators say is suspicious death on Friday.
That tragedy occurred in a couple of hours on Friday and turned an ordinary emergency response into a complex investigation, the police said.
The events took place early Friday morning. The first calls came in between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. from residents who were aware of strong smoke in the neighborhood in the 14900 block of Riverside Trail, said the sheriff. Emergency crews quickly arrived and searched the area but found no active fire or a source of the smoke.
But the situation grew to a whole new level just hours later. Deputies and other fire crews rushed back to the neighborhood just after they saw the heavy white smoke billowing from the home at 11:40 a.m. Fire crews rushed to put the flames out and clear the house, only to discover a grim situation inside.
A Complex Crime scene and Disturbing Revelations. Capt. Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office described the environment as a “complicated scene, a complex scene” at a late afternoon news conference.
Capt. Sparks said two adults, both in their 40s, and six children from 5 to 15 years old were among those killed. Some of those who investigators found in a chilling update also had gunshot wounds, he said. Details about how many victims had gunshot wounds were not available until autopsies and proper identification are done, he said.
Because the fire itself is suspicious and believed to have been intentionally set, investigators from the Michigan State Police arson investigation unit were immediately called in to process the evidence with local detectives.
Investigators Exploring Murder-Suicide Theory
Even though police will be at it all day to try and piece together the tragedy, Capt. Sparks said investigators are not looking for outside suspects in it. Given who lived in the house and how the scene was initially reported at the time of the crime, detectives believe it was a murder-suicide, he said.
Neighbors were shocked and grief-stricken over the loss and said they were very familiar with the children and they played outside frequently in the neighborhood.
All of the structural remains are still being examined and the official autopsies are scheduled to determine the cause of death.
