This has made people’s sea journey from conflict-ravaged areas to low-income areas and their migration to unstable countries even more urgent.

Several overcrowded vessels were reported to have tried to cross the waters near Myanmar, the United Nations stated in the report, but at the same time were unable to cross the waters near Myanmar, in which boats were attempting to cross the waters with boats that had too many passengers.

The boats were not able to survive because of the weather conditions, poor safety equipment that would make the vessels unable to survive, and vessels were overcrowded and not safe, they said.

The victims are feared to be men, women, and children who were trying to reach safer destinations to escape the danger. People are in fact in increasing danger because of the increasing risks of unofficial and dangerous migration routes often being manipulated by human traffickers who exploit desperate people, the UN has noted.

Myanmar has been experiencing years of political instability and humanitarian crisis that has driven tens of thousands of people out of their homes for security and better options. And the current crisis has pushed many communities in the region into dangerous migration over the water despite the dangers.

The United Nations has said it is extremely concerned about the magnitude of the disaster and has demanded that search and rescue be strengthened as soon as possible. Survivors and missing passengers are being sought after by officials and humanitarian organizations and families are being helped.

Boat tragedies are common in the region where migrants attempt to travel through dangerous maritime routes. Many of the ships ferrying such people are not intended for such a large number of people and so accidents and loss of life are more likely.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly warned migration pathways need to be safer and trafficking networks must be stopped. They have also called on governments in the region to address the root causes of people to embark on such life-threatening pathways.

The latest incident is just the latest in a growing list of maritime disasters that have hit refugees and migrants in Southeast Asia. Human lives must be protected at all costs and international cooperation is needed to prevent these tragedies in the future, the UN noted.

Search and rescue teams continue to search for survivors and recover those missing. Families of passengers are waiting for information and humanitarian agencies are preparing support for those affected by the disaster.

The tragedy has once again taken the world back to the risks faced by displaced populations and the urgent need for solutions to humanitarian crises in conflict-affected areas.
