A new variant of COVID-19, informally termed ‘Cicada’, is at present in high public safety concern as it is emerging quickly in several neighboring countries. While more is studied for the impact of the new strain on humans, from what we can tell, the new version might be more spread through this group.
What is the ‘Cicada’ Variant?
Moreover, the “Cicada” variant (e.g., the gene mutation of the coronavirus that has been detected over the last few months) has been associated with a higher transmission rate. Like earlier variants, we know it evolved through processes of natural mutation of the virus. The health system will be closely watching its spread and its behaviour for assessment of its impacts and severe effects on diseases worldwide.
What symptoms would you watch out for?
Experts say the symptoms with Cicada seem like those of earlier COVID-19 strains but patients are also experiencing at least some different patterns. Common symptoms include:
- Fever and chills
- Persistent cough
- Sore throat
- Fatigue and body aches
- Headache.
- Runny or blocked nose
Some cases also reported gastrointestinal issues and more fatigue, but it is difficult to determine any unique symptom profile.
How risky Is It?
In all the existing works, there is no clear evidence that Cicada variant causes more severe illness than other variants, but rapidly spreading is of particular concern. The more spreads a disease, the more chances you'll be to get an infection and thus hospitals will be opened in older people, those with other health problems.
Health care professionals point out, however, that if a disease is mild even though transmission is slow, it can certainly disrupt health care systems.
What Experts Are Warning
Public health officials and researchers are advising them to take no chance, but only to remain cautious at least through their research time. What kinds of action are you suggesting not to panic?
All vaccinations and booster doses. Wearing masks in crowded or hazardous areas. Hand hygiene at hand. Not making contact where symptomatic
Experts also stress when the early testing and isolation need to be done (and is a must) to prevent further spread.
Global Monitoring Underway
They are keeping the variant on the radar of health agencies around the world the World Health Organization includes. Strong surveillance mechanisms and measures are being developed to detect any major changes in severity, vaccine effectiveness or reinfection rates are being reviewed.
Since the Cicada variant is likely one of the first to come it is clear that we are not over the pandemic with the experts saying they believe preparedness and awareness are the best things you have. If there are some precautions and knowledge then they can reduce risk, and keep the communities safe.
