Peru Stadium Tragedy: 1 Dead, 60 Injured at Alianza Lima Rally

A night of celebration turned into a scene of mourning on Friday, April 3, 2026, after an “unfortunate incident” at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium left at least one person dead and 60 others injured. The tragedy occurred before the huge fan rally around Alianza Lima and Club Universitario de Deportes football match in the stadium.

Initial speculation about the incident centered on possible structural failure or the collapse of a stadium wall in La Victoria district. But Alianza Lima quickly moved to clarify the situation by issuing a statement on X (formerly Twitter) in which they said that the accident was not due to the fall of the walls or structural failure of the sports complex; instead, the accident was caused by "the fall of walls or structural failures of the sports complex."

Casualties and Emergency Response

Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco confirmed the grim statistics to the media, saying at least 47 people were initially treated, but the injury count has since risen to 60.

"There has been an unfortunate incident at the stadium in which dozens have been injured... and sadly there is one fatality," Velasco said.

Of the victims, 39 were sent to hospitals across the Lima region. At least three people were in critical condition, medical authorities said. Eight mobile emergency units (SAMU) were deployed by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) to provide immediate pre-hospital care as the stadium was placed under an emergency lockdown.

Investigation into the Cause

While the exact cause is under investigation, the early evidence indicates a stampede in the southern stands. Lima Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo assured the club that the stadium was structurally sound.

"The structure of the southern stands appeared to be in good condition. There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit," Pajuelo said after a preliminary sweep of the venue, commonly known as Matute.

Derby to Proceed

The Peruvian football league has said that the “Clásico” between Alianza Lima and Club Universitario de Deportes will take place as planned on Saturday night. Security measures will be significantly beefed up in the wake of the tragedy.

Such an accident is one of the deadliest stadium tragedies in Peru in recent years and is another stark reminder of the 1964 Estadio Nacional disaster. Local authorities are still investigating whether overcrowding of the stadium, plus a lack of crowd control measures, was to blame for the fatal crush.
