Royal Divorce in the Digital Age: Sheikha Mahra’s Groundbreaking Instagram Declaration

Sheikha Mahra bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the daughter of the Ruler of Dubai. With social media, she took no small part in announcing her divorce from her husband Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum. In July 2024, on her verified Instagram page, she made an announcement that broke traditional royal protocols and official state media records, bypassing the news, leaving it laying bare what he referred to as a paradigm shift to how high-profile profiles are managing their personal lives in the Middle East.

The post, known as her "Triple Talaq" post, was heard 'round the world. The divorce was announced in a jarring, text-based post that targeted the husband directly. “Dear Husband,” the message stated in the initial message, “Since you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce.”

In an audacious hijacking of the traditional Islamic practice of triple talaq which has historically and legally been a prerogative enjoyed by men in many jurisdictions she wrote “I divorce you” three times, then signed off as “Your ex-wife.” The timing of the split was particularly astonishing for many, with it happening just over a year after their lavish wedding in May 2023 and just two months after their first daughter was born.

The announcement's public-facing nature and subsequent direct accusation of infidelity (“occupied with other companions”) immediately set off a viral frenzy whereby the couple unfollowed each other and took their entire photo pool from their digital profiles.

The Recovery of the Story: The “Divorce” Perfume

Instead of avoiding the spotlight, Sheikha Mahra used the conversation to launch a brand new initiative.  In September 2024, she launched a fragrance under her brand name, Mahra M1, called simply "Divorce." It was also celebrated as yet another triumph for her trademark: a moment of pure personal branding that took a traumatic life event and turned it into a symbol of independence and strength and self-efficacy. The move was hailed by netizens as an “iconic comeback,” noting her resilience is reminiscent of the “Revenge Dress” era of late Princess Diana.

A New Chapter in 2026

Early in 2026, the Sheikha’s life has kept moving in the public eye. It has been confirmed she is engaged to Moroccan-American rapper French Montana, who was also said to have made an official engagement proposal for her at Paris Fashion Week. And the liaison is a momentous fresh chapter for the Princess, who has long managed the demands of being both a mother and an advocate for women, as well as a business mogul. Her narrative is a touchstone for conversations about the ever-changing nexus of royal tradition, digital transparency and female agency in the 21st century.
