Todd Blanche Named Acting Attorney General as Trump Ousts Pam Bondi

President Donald Trump has appointed Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as acting head of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Bondi was removed by an abrupt removal because of deep internal frustration and public pressure over sensitive files.

A Transition to the Private Sector

President Trump announced the leadership change via his Truth Social platform, framing Bondi’s departure as a transition to a new role.

"Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year," Trump wrote. “Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country... she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector."

Despite the nice public send-off, it was felt that the removal was due to the President's frustration with Bondi's handling of files about late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Trump was also frustrated by the fact that he had not been able to pursue criminal cases against his political foes quickly enough, he said.

Who is Todd Blanche?

Todd Blanche, 51, is filling in the role of Acting Attorney General as one of the President’s most trusted legal confidants. His ascent within the DOJ has been rapid but his ties to Trump run deep:

Lead Defense Counsel: Blanche was a key member of Trump’s private legal team before he joined the government, and he had also appeared in high-profile cases including the New York hush-money trial and various federal investigations.

In March 2025, he was confirmed as Deputy Attorney General, the second highest-ranking official in the DOJ. And in that role he has done what he could with the Justice Department’s day-to-day operations.

Blanche was a federal prosecutor in his previous career and worked at the Southern District of New York (SDNY) for nearly a decade as a violent crime prosecutor.

What’s next for the Justice Department?

The appointment of Blanche signals a potential effort at putting a “battle-tested” ally at the helm of the nation’s top law enforcement agency. And with the DOJ’s leadership taking a more aggressive approach after decades of federal prosecution and high-stakes criminal defense work, Blanche is expected to be more aggressive.

We will be watching closely to see if this leadership shift accelerates the investigations and prosecutions that the President has publicly advocated for in recent months.
