Trump Shifts Patriotic Ad Costs To MAGA Inc. After Taxpayer Criticism

Donald Trump has said he will no longer use taxpayer dollars to fund a series of promotional television advertisements his administration is running. The costs of what he called “Patriotic Ads” would be covered by MAGA, Inc., the pro-Trump super PAC.

As of October 5, the Trump administration had spent at least $10.1 million in taxpayer funds on the advertisements, according to political advertising tracking company AdImpact. At least 13 campaign-style advertisements promoting Trump and his policies had been created by the previous week.

Trump announced the funding change in a post on Truth Social on October 5. He noted that the advertisements were good news for the United States and said using government money for such messaging was standard. But he said he had decided to use money raised for MAGA, Inc. instead because of criticism of taxpayer funds.

The White House has defended the ads as public service announcements, and not campaign material. That will be in contrast to the criticism of the videos as being “far too conventional” government messages, the administration’s position has been.

Ads Show Trump And Patriotic Imagery

Clips from 12 of the advertisements have been obtained, with individual videos ranging from about 15 seconds to three minutes. Two of the advertisements had already aired, while another titled “Final Battle” was also broadcast in recent weeks.

The advertisements carry the expression “Paid for by the U.S. Government” at the bottom of the screen. Their themes vary, but many contain similar elements— footage of Trump, positive news coverage and very patriotic imagery.

Some of the visuals include a graduation cap toss during a military ceremony, fireworks around Mount Rushmore, and military flyovers. The use of such imagery has divided whether the advertisements fit the bill for public information campaigns or political-style messaging.

There are also reports that Trump is involved in the production of the advertisements. According to advisers cited in media reports, the White House video team, which works in the communications office, has produced the videos in-house. At least one advertisement was linked to a pro-Trump meme group.

Question of the use of government funds.

The advertising campaign has drawn the attention of watchdog organisations which fear that federal funding for the advertisements could violate restrictions on government spending for propaganda or partisan messaging.

Federal appropriations rules set limits on how government agencies are allowed to use public funds, especially when communication is seen as political advocacy. However, whether the specific advertisements violate federal law is in question, and the legal standing of the ad expenditures is also a question of whether outside organisations would have legal standing on which to challenge the spending in court.

The controversy has drawn criticism from across the political spectrum. Critics have questioned why taxpayer money was used for ads that they say look like campaign-style messages, while the administration has maintained that the spots are for a public information purpose.

Trump turns to MAGA Inc. funding.

Trump’s decision to shift funding to MAGA, Inc. changes the source of money being used for the advertisements. MAGA, Inc. is a super PAC that funds Trump’s political agenda. Trump said the money would come from funds he had raised for the organisation instead of taxpayer money.

The move comes as political advertising and government messaging are getting more attention ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. The issue also underscores the difficulty in distinguishing government public service announcements from political communications when advertisements prominently feature a sitting president and promote administration policies.

Trump has defended the advertisements as patriotic messaging, but critics have criticized their intent and the use of government resources. The decision to use MAGA, Inc. funds for future advertisements will keep the debate in the middle of the official government communications and political promotion line.
