Three to Six Policemen Killed in Twin Attacks in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Amid Rising Militancy

Two police personnel were killed in separate militant attacks in northeast Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in an indication of the worsening security situation in the region. The attacks came close to each other and underlined the continued threat posed by armed militant groups operating near the Afghanistan border.

The first attack occurred when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in one of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's districts, they said. One policeman died and another was injured in the attack. Security forces immediately arrived at the scene and carried out a search operation to find the attackers.

In another incident, another police officer died when militants targeted a police checkpoint in another district. The attackers used automatic weapons before they fled the area. Reinforcements were immediately deployed and a large-scale combing operation was launched in nearby villages and mountainous areas.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. But officials suspect militants who have stepped up their campaign in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent years. Attacks have been increasing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially since the Taliban took power in neighboring Afghanistan in 2021.

Pakistani security agencies have conducted intelligence-based efforts to take down militant networks in the area. But attacks are common and challenge law enforcement agencies that are supposed to be at the center of peace and stability.

The government strongly condemned the attacks and paid tribute to the fallen policemen, who they said were martyrs who died in the line of duty. Senior police officers paid tribute to the bereaved families and said they would bring those responsible to justice.

Authorities have beefed up security across sensitive districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. There have been further checkpoints set up, patrol forces have been beefed up, and intelligence gathering has been strengthened in preparation for further attacks. Residents have also been advised to report suspicious activities and to cooperate with the security agencies, officials have said.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains one of Pakistan’s most volatile regions, given its strategic location on the Afghan border, security experts say. The province has seen violence from militants at least from time to time even after the military has tried to bring it back to a normal state.

The recent attacks come at the same time as Pakistan's internal security has become increasingly threatened with militant attacks across several provinces in recent weeks. “More efficient border control, better intelligence coordination, and longer and sustained counterterrorism operations are needed to combat that threat,” they said.

Since the two police officers are now dead, it is a reminder of all that goes on with law enforcement personnel in conflict-prone regions of Pakistan at the same time, the police are under growing threat from terrorists. Pakistani police have reiterated their resolve to tackle terrorism and protect the people of Pakistan by protecting them from danger even though security problems are very serious.
