A suspected Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s Moscow region has caused extensive damage to a huge logistics plant belonging to Wildberries, one of Russia’s largest e-commerce companies. It is reported that there is a huge fire at the company’s logistics center in Koledino, and huge damage is occurring across the enormous complex.
The facility covers an area of approximately 250,000 square metres and is one of Wildberries’ largest logistics centres in Russia. The size of the fire and the damage have received attention in recent years due to continued attacks by drones in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Massive fire at logistics complex
According to some of the reports, Wildberries logistics hub in Koledino was attacked, and a major fire broke out at the facility.
The complex is a critical part of the company’s logistics network and handles storage and movement of goods. Because of its immense size, a major disruption at the facility would affect the company’s operations and supply chain.
Images and videos from the complex showed flames and thick smoke rising from parts of the complex as emergency services rushed in to the site.
The exact nature of the attack, as well as the number of drones involved and extent of structural damage, is under investigation.
The losses are now estimated to be in excess of $1.5 billion.
The financial impact of the incident has been very large, with estimates for damage in excess of $1.5 billion.
The figure would also make the incident one of the more serious attacks on a commercial logistics facility in the region. But the final financial loss will depend on a detailed assessment of warehouse structure, equipment, inventory, and operational disruption.
A facility like this can contain large quantities of goods and logistics equipment, and so the costs of damage can be physical and financial loss due to the interrupted operations.
The economic impact will be better understood when further assessment is undertaken.
Wildberries faces another warehouse attack
The incident is not the first time a Wildberries facility has been attacked.
Another warehouse belonging to the company in Elektrostal was targeted in July, the company said. The repeated incidents have raised concerns about the vulnerability of large logistics and industrial facilities to drone attacks.
Russia has reported more drone incidents targeting locations in and around Moscow and other parts of Russia since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.
And Ukraine has frequently used long-range drones to strike military, energy and industrial infrastructure inside Russia, and Moscow has frequently accused Kyiv of carrying out attacks on Russian territory. Kyiv in general does not publicly claim responsibility for every strike reported.
Strategic and economic implications
Large logistics hubs have become more important in modern warfare as they support large commercial supply chains and regional distribution networks.
The Wildberries facility is a commercial site, so any major disruption can have wider economic consequences. Disruption to storage space, equipment, and inventory can impact delivery and hold up businesses and consumers.
The damage done also illustrates the increasing reach of drone warfare. Modern drones can travel very long distances and target locations far from active front lines, so the government and companies need to get security measures in place.
Investigation and damage assessment are ongoing.
They will investigate the reasons for the attack and assess the extent of damage. Emergency services will also need to determine whether the fire has been contained and if the facility has been damaged.
The $1.5 billion-plus loss is an estimate, and the final number could change after a detailed assessment is completed.
The incident comes as Russia and Ukraine are still fighting long-distance drone attacks on infrastructure and facilities well beyond the battlefield, and both sides increasingly target infrastructure and facilities far beyond the battlefield.
For Wildberries, the reported destruction of such a large logistics facility could create operational challenges and possibly disrupt distribution across parts of Russia.
So the incident in Koledino is significant not only because of the size of the fire but because it demonstrates the potential economic impact of drone warfare on large commercial infrastructure.
