The person carrying the weapon has been identified as 55-year-old Kamlesh Rai, a former corporator from the Shinde group of Shiv Sena. Rai belongs to Azamgarh and was travelling with the licensed firearm.

According to preliminary information, the pistol discharged while it was being handed over to security personnel for examination. The unexpected firing caused panic at the airport and caused two members of the security staff to be injured.

Two airport staff members were injured.

The accidental discharge reportedly injured a female staff member in the thigh. Another staff member sustained an injury to a finger during the incident.

Both of the injured personnel were immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

The incident worried airport staff and passengers because firearms are sensitive at an airport security checkpoint.

The police had a quick response and secured the area while investigating how the firearm could discharge while the security process was in progress.

Former corporator arrested

After the incident, police arrested Kamlesh Rai and registered a case against him for negligence.

Investigators are trying to establish how the pistol was handled and whether the appropriate safety precautions were taken by those transporting and presenting the licensed firearm at the airport.

The arrest is to see if any laws regarding the transportation and handling of licensed firearms at airports were broken.

Ammunition recovered

According to authorities, they recovered one empty cartridge and 21 live cartridges from Rai.

As officials determine the circumstances under which the firearm was being carried and how it ended up discharged, the ammunition recovery will be an important part of the investigation.

The firearm, ammunition, and relevant documents (including the weapon licence) are expected to be examined by investigators.

Forensic examination may also be carried out to determine the nature of the discharge and whether the firing was accidental or not.

BCAS begins investigation

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has apparently begun investigating whether regulations related to the transport of licensed firearms at airports were followed.

Airports have strict gun and ammo handling procedures. The rules are so that weapons are properly declared, secured, and handled before a passenger enters the airport.

The BCAS investigation will examine the security procedures followed in the case, documentation carried by the passenger, and whether the firearm was being transported in accordance with applicable rules.

Security procedures under scrutiny

The incident once again underscores the need to have very strict firearm-handling procedures at airports.

A licensed weapon can be legally owned and transported under applicable laws, but passengers carrying firearms must meet airport and aviation-security requirements. Any lapse in handling can put passengers and airport employees at risk.

In this case, the weapon discharged during a security inspection has prompted authorities to examine the circumstances.

Investigators will determine whether the discharge is the result of improper handling, a mechanical problem, or another factor. They will also check whether the weapon had been properly secured before it was presented for inspection.

Investigation continues

The police and aviation-security authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. The two staff members’ injuries have brought the case to a serious level, and the recovery of live ammunition has increased the scrutiny of the firearm’s transportation.

The condition of both injured staff members is now reported to be stable.

The incident will result in an investigation of passenger and airport security procedures. The regulations for licensed firearms and ammunition will also be examined, said local authorities.

As the investigation continues, officials should determine if more legal or regulatory action is warranted against the former corporator.

The incident serves as a reminder that even licensed firearms need to be properly secured in airports.
