But per the preliminary data, shots were fired during school hours, and pandemonium ensued as all students tried to take cover. Teachers and school personnel quickly went into lockdown procedures to protect students. In minutes, police responded, clearing buildings, classrooms and common areas to find out what had happened.

Officials say they haven’t yet determined how many injuries or deaths, if any, occurred. There may have also been someone who required medical care, although as schools continue to be built worldwide on a campus of this scale, emergency medical crews were seen entering.

Parents were briefed on the lockdown and advised to stay off the campus until new instructions were forthcoming. Eyewitness Accounts: Students barricade doors and sit under desks in a fearful scene. “We were hearing loud bangs and didn’t know what was going on. Our teacher locked the door and told us to stay quiet,” one student said.

Both the shooter and suspect are still being investigated by authorities to discern their identity and motive. It is unclear whether the suspect was detained; if not, he is still at large. The school district announced a lockdown with a statement and offered peace of mind to families that their child’s protection was paramount.

Counselling avenues should also be included for students and staff post-event. The incident is one more factor in that rise in anxiety about issues of safety at schools and gun violence, fueling anew pressure in schools across the country to offer tighter security.
