At a notable act near the U.S.-Mexico border, there has been a shooting in which a U.S. Border Patrol agent has left one man in critical condition. The incident, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, has sparked a wave of investigations as federal and local authorities attempt to piece together the plot.
Confrontation in Arivaca in the Morning
Roughly 7:30 AM the shooting occurred in the unincorporated community of Arivaca, Arizona, 10 miles north of the border. Border Patrol agents, law enforcement sources said, tried to stop a pickup truck in what was a targeted operation. According to the complaint, the driver fled on his feet and also fired at both ground agents and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) helicopter. Agents shot back and hit the suspect.
Medical Response and Investigation
Emergency responders out of the Santa Rita Fire District provided first aid before the man was rushed by a medical helicopter to a nearby Tucson trauma center. He is still in critical condition and under federal custody. Law enforcement officials have reported that the suspect was a U.S. citizen who was reportedly armed with at least one firearm at the time of the incident.
Calls for Transparency in the Face of Recent Scrutiny
The FBI is driving the investigation of what they called an “alleged assault on a federal officer.” At the same time, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department is conducting a parallel use-of-force investigation, to ensure transparency. It occurred amid rising tension nationally over federal immigration enforcement. It has followed three recent spate-of high-profile shootings by federal agents in Minnesota most notably the fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti that have triggered massive protests and political debate over the tactics employed by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel.
