Egyptian-American physician and public health expert Abdul El-Sayed has won the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s U.S. Senate race, giving him a shot at a seat in one of the nation’s most closely watched elections.
Born and raised in Detroit with Egyptian immigrant parents, El-Sayed has forged a career that combines medicine, public health and public service.
He graduated from the University of Michigan and got his medical degree at Columbia University, and as a Rhodes scholar he did a doctorate in public health at the University of Oxford which further developed his credentials in medical and policy.
El-Sayed’s public health leadership was in many positions before he entered politics. He was Executive Director of the Detroit Health Department and later Director General of Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services.
In these positions he worked in the areas of increasing access to health care, community health programs and tackling public health issues empirically through evidence-based strategies.
El-Sayed first entered the political arena in Michigan’s 2018 gubernatorial election, where he ran as a progressive Democrat. While he didn’t win the governor’s race, his campaign was widely recognized for advocating for universal healthcare, economic fairness, affordable education and greater social welfare policies. Now, he remains an influential advocate for healthcare reform and social equity.
In the Democratic Senate primary, El-Sayed defeated Representative Haley Stevens in an all-out race. His campaign generated huge grassroots support and many more volunteers and small-dollar donors were back to support him.
The campaign also benefited from endorsements from Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, who both endorsed him, and helped him to be seen by both and the Democratic electorate.
El-Sayed campaigned on his Senate campaign to expand affordable healthcare, lower prescription drug costs, strengthen workers’ rights, invest in public education, tackle climate change and make housing more affordable.
His platform appealed to younger voters and progressives who were looking for a new type of leadership to solve economic inequality and improve public services.
Elected state Democratic Party leaders view El-Sayed’s primary victory as another step in the direction of progressive candidates in the Democratic Party. Michigan is a critical battleground state and the Senate race is expected to be of huge national interest, as it could determine the balance of power in Washington.
In the general election, El-Sayed is expected to face Republican Mike Rogers in what analysts expect to be a highly competitive race. Both parties will be spending a lot in the race to win back one of the most important Senate seats in the country.
El-Sayed is also not only politically active but has also advocated for public service and the healthcare system in general. He is married to psychiatrist Sarah Jukaku and has two daughters, and has frequently spoken out on community engagement, equal opportunities and a healthcare system that benefits all Americans.
With a Democratic primary victory, Abdul El-Sayed has taken a big step toward representing Michigan in the U.S. Senate and sets the stage for one of the nation’s most eagerly awaited elections in a long time.
