Why Is It ‘Raining’ From Buildings in China?

A dramatic video of rain falling from high-rise buildings in China, and the way it looks like rain is falling straight out of high-rise buildings, has gone viral on social media, which has people in China in shock and wondering how such an unusual phenomenon could happen.

The footage shows huge streams of water streaming down the sides of high-rise buildings so high that buildings are actually wet and the structures are producing rain, and the visuals in the video are so impressive that people ask whether the video is real or just an illusion.

What actually did happen?

The phenomenon is not caused by the buildings themselves, nor is it an artificial waterfall. It is the result of extremely heavy rainfall combined with the design of modern high-rise buildings.

During heavy downpours, rainwater rapidly builds up on rooftops, balconies, terraces, drainage channels, drains, and external ledges, including the roof, and even on top of the buildings. When drainage systems are overwhelmed or cannot drain quickly enough, the excess water spills over the edges of the buildings in large sheets.

Such overflow gives a sense that rain is pouring through the buildings themselves.

Why is it so dramatic?

The roof of high-rise buildings has large roof surfaces and complicated drainage systems. During cloudbursts or torrential rain, thousands of litres of water can accumulate within minutes.

If rooftop drains exceed their capacity, water flows over parapets and building edges, creating a spectacular “waterfall” effect. Strong winds can push the falling water further away from the building to make it look like rain is coming from the building itself.

The camera angle in many viral videos further enhances the optical illusion, making the cascading water appear even more dramatic.

A result of extreme weather

China has experienced a few intense periods of rainfall in recent years during the summer monsoon season. Urban areas full of skyscrapers often witness dramatic scenes when heavy rain overwhelms drainage systems.

Short-term cloudbursts can dump huge amounts of rain in a short period of time, as weather experts say, and can produce temporary flooding and sometimes even sudden visuals like those seen in the viral video.

Social Media Reactions

The video has been viewed millions of times on social media, and users were astonished at what many thought was impossible.

Comments ranged from describing the buildings as “giant waterfalls” to jokes that the skyscrapers had developed their own weather systems. When weather experts explained the science behind the footage, many viewers appreciated how urban architecture and extreme rainfall combined to create such a striking visual.

No Supernatural or Structural issue

Experts stress that this is primarily the result of extreme rainfall and temporary drainage overflow, not evidence of buildings leaking or generating water. Although it may sound scary, similar scenes have occurred in other cities in the world when it rains extremely hard.

If water continues to overflow for longer periods or causes damage, building managers will need to check drainage systems to ensure they are functioning.

The viral video is a great reminder of how extreme weather, modern architecture, and camera angles work together to produce visual effects so bizarre they seem almost unbelievable at first glance. And while the footage may seem incredible, the reality is the simple science of heavy rainfall and overloaded drainage systems.
