The artificial intelligence industry has closely watched leadership changes at OpenAI, and one high-profile decision has been made recently.
Fidji Simo, one of the company’s chief executives, announced she is stepping down from the company’s full-time role, as she is no longer able to do so for health reasons .
She will be part-time at OpenAI, not working in a day-to-day job at all as a board member, she said, but will be part of the company as a part-time adviser.
Fidji Simo is a top tech executive with a solid career and experience working at some of the world's biggest tech companies.
Prior to joining OpenAI, she was Chief Executive Officer of Instacart, where she took the grocery delivery service public market for the first time in its history.
Simo has also worked for Meta now Facebook for more than a decade, building and expanding its products: Facebook Video, News Feed, and advertising.
She is regarded as one of the most influential women in Silicon Valley.
Simo joined OpenAI in 2025 to lead the company’s product and business operations.
Working alongside CEO Sam Altman, she helped bring OpenAI’s AI technologies to businesses and consumers everywhere.
She also helped to set partnerships and product strategies when the company moved beyond research into commercial AI applications.
But recently, Simo revealed that she has been on an extended medical leave due to a chronic neuroimmune condition that has worsened over time.
With her doctors and family in mind, she felt it would not be healthy for her to return to a full-time executive position and will take a part-time advisory role rather than be working at OpenAI.
Simo thanked her colleagues for their support during her medical leave. She said she was going to try to go on with a full-time job but her health was too bad to do so.
Her departure has been met with an outpouring of support from the tech industry, and it’s a great thing that she is open about her work and life problems to people in her industry.
OpenAI also confirmed that its current leadership team will take over Simo’s responsibilities.
Sam Altman, President Greg Brockman, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar, and other senior executives will continue to lead the company’s ambitious AI roadmap.
The transition will not affect OpenAI’s ongoing research, product development, or partnerships.
Simo's experience and strategic guidance will, even as OpenAI expands its global presence, come in a way that is very helpful but not so much on a daily basis.
It is also a growing concern in the tech industry about executive wellness and the importance of health, even in highly demanding leadership roles.
