Mixing wartime expediency with high-stakes diplomacy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has extended a one-of-a-kind military offer to Gulf states under fire from Iranian retaliatory strikes in an interview. In an interview with Bloomberg on March 2, 2026, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to deploy its most advanced drone-interception services to support the protection of civilians in the Middle East.
But the bid is accompanied by some sizable geopolitical “catch”: Gulf leaders must leverage their diplomatic leverage and persuade Vladimir Putin to implement a month-long ceasefire in Ukraine.
Expertise Born of Fire
Zelenskyy’s offer is based on Ukraine’s unparalleled ability to counter the Shahed-type drones that are now embedded into modern warfare. Over the past four years, Ukraine has contended with more than 57,000 of these suicide drones of Iranian origin.
“Leaders of the Middle East have good relations with the Russians,” Zelenskyy said during the interview. “They can call for the Russians to put into effect a ceasefire for a month … if they’re telling Russia to stop firing, we can then send our experts in and shield civilians.”
The President also observed that although Gulf countries had better air defense hardware, the sheer level of "swarm" strikes under way by Iran has allowed missiles and drones to penetrate even some of the most advanced barriers that have been constructed to guard cities in the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain.
The "Accomplice" Narrative
The timing of the offer is calculated. Since Operation Epic Fury began on February 28 that combined U.S.-Israeli campaign, which killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei Iran has retaliated by attacking regional host locations of the U.S. military’s bases.
Zelenskyy has repeatedly called the Iranian regime an “accomplice of Putin,” alleging that the technology employed in the first round of terrorizing Kyiv is now causing carnage in the Gulf. By tying the security of the Middle East to the ceasefire in Ukraine, Zelensky is trying to compel “neutral” regional countries to take the final word on the international fray.
The UK Connection: International Support
Zelenskyy’s proposal comes at a time when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is making comments that suggest Britain could facilitate the deployment of Ukrainian experts to support its Gulf partners. No Gulf country has formally requested such assistance so far, meaning Ukraine’s offer shows how the former is transforming into a global leading player in electronic warfare and drone security. Yet for Zelenskyy, the objective holds firm: to leverage every resource offered Ukraine’s hard-nosed military know-how included to secure a stop to the Russian invasion.
Key Points of the Offer:
- The Help: Elite drone-interceptor teams and technical experts from “Gepard.”
- The Timeframe: The relief would be linked to a ceasefire lasting two weeks to two months.
- The Objective: To decrease the impact of Iranian "Mosaic Defense" strategies employed against Gulf civilian centers.
