A 16-year-old Class 11 student from Uttar Pradesh was gang-raped in a moving sleeper bus in a 47-kilometre journey from Greater Noida’s Pari Chowk to Delhi’s Kashmere Gate, police said.
Delhi Police have arrested the bus driver and conductor in connection with the case and seized the vehicle for forensic examination. The incident has raised fresh concerns about passenger safety and the monitoring of private sleeper buses on the Delhi-NCR.
According to police, the survivor is from Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh and had traveled to Noida to meet her cousin. Reports said she had left home because she had a dispute with her family.
In the midst of torrential downpours, she somehow left her mother’s house and got off at Pari Chowk and was stuck there. It was around this time that an empty sleeper bus came to the area. The teenager flagged down the bus and signaled it to stop.
The driver and conductor told her that they were going toward Noida's Sector 63 and offered her a lift.
According to police sources who were present when the bus began to move, the conductor made inappropriate advances toward the girl. The survivor said the situation escalated and the driver and conductor sexually assaulted her inside the moving vehicle.
She said she fought back and was threatened with severe punishment if she raised an alarm. As the police are investigating, the accused are entitled to due process under the law.
The bus travelled about 47 kilometres from Pari Chowk to Kashmere Gate in Delhi. Police have said it was a sleeper coach with curtains around the berths, so it was difficult for people outside to see what was happening inside.
The bus had previously developed a mechanical issue and had been taken to a workshop in Surajpur for repair. After the repairs were done, the driver and conductor were trying to drive the empty bus to Timarpur when they met the teenager.
The girl was abandoned late at night on the Ring Road near the Kashmere Gate bus terminal. When she was left there, she approached the Kashmere Gate police and reported what had happened.

Delhi Police later started looking into her complaint and found the two suspects and arrested them. The accused have been identified in reports as driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep.
The police monitored the suspects with CCTV footage and found them at the bus parking area at Timarpur.
The sleeper bus supposedly used in the incident has been seized and sent for forensic examination.
Investigators will look at the vehicle for any evidence which would support the survivor’s account and determine the sequence of events during the journey.
The case has once again put the spotlight on safety in private buses operating in Delhi-NCR, particularly sleeper coaches where enclosed berths and curtains can present problems for tracking passenger safety.
Unlike traditional buses with open seats, sleeper coaches have relatively secluded compartments and so effective surveillance and emergency-response mechanisms are of particular importance.
The incident has also drawn comparisons with the broader history of crimes against women on public transport in Delhi.
But authorities and investigators are currently focused on establishing the facts of this particular case and ensuring that the survivor receives appropriate support and protection.
Police are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the assault, the bus’s movement and other CCTV and forensic evidence.
The arrests of the driver and conductor are certainly a step forward, but the evidence will have to be evaluated further.
The case also serves as an example for stronger safety measures in private passenger transport: proper verification of drivers and conductors, functioning emergency mechanisms, sound monitoring systems, and strict adherence to passenger-safety regulations.
For families and passengers on sleeper buses, the incident is a tragic wake-up call that there are far too many people to trust in those protections and in the late nights.
The Delhi Police continue their investigation, but the survivor’s identity has not been disclosed in accordance with laws protecting minors involved in sexual-offence cases.
