Karnataka completed the three years of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, one of the state government’s flagship guarantee programmes, with many iconic landmarks lit up in pink on Sunday evening.
To celebrate the third anniversary of the welfare scheme, prominent monuments and government buildings across Karnataka were lit up in pink between 6 pm and 10 pm on August 30. The illumination was organized by the Department of Information and Public Relations.
Other landmarks that were illuminated were Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi, Mysuru Palace, Chitradurga's Kallina Kote, Hampi’s Stone Chariot, the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner’s Office building in Mangaluru, and Kittur Chennamma Circles in Belagavi.
The pink lighting was chosen as a symbol of women’s empowerment and the importance of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, which was introduced with the aim of providing financial support to women heading households.
₹2,000 monthly assistance for women
Under the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, eligible women identified as heads of households receive ₹2,000 each month. The financial support is intended to help women meet household costs and to make them feel more independent.
This scheme is one step in establishing a better economic and social system for women to lead a more financially self-reliant life, according to the state government.
Over the past three years, the programme has reached more than 1.20 crore beneficiaries. In total, more than ₹76,500 crore has been transferred to beneficiaries' bank accounts under this scheme so far.
The achievement was not only through the release of financial assistance but also through public displays across very important locations in the state.
Famous Karnataka Landmarks Bathed In Pink
The pink light reflected in the night and made the visual spectacle at some of Karnataka’s most popular landmarks very visible.
In Bengaluru, the iconic Vidhana Soudha was illuminated in pink, while the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi had the special lighting treatment.
The historic Mysuru Palace, one of Karnataka’s most famous tourist spots, was also illuminated at that time. The famous Stone Chariot was also lit up in the heritage-rich area of Hampi.
Chitradurga's historic Kallina Kote and selected locations in Belagavi and Mangaluru were also illuminated.
The event was intended to emphasize the three-year journey of the Gruha Lakshmi programme and draw attention to women’s economic support.
Pink Lighting symbolizes Women’s empowerment
As a symbol of women and their role in society, we used pink lighting. The government said it was done to highlight the achievements and contributions of the women who have been beneficiaries of the scheme.
Since then, Gruha Lakshmi has been one of Karnataka's main welfare programmes. The monthly assistance is directly transferred to the beneficiary class, thus making it a central part of the state's social welfare programme.
With the completion of three years, the government emphasized the scale of this programme as it showed the number of beneficiaries and amount transferred through the scheme.
The pink-lit monuments thus were a visual marker of the anniversary, combining Karnataka’s heritage landmarks with a message around women’s financial empowerment.
As the state celebrated three years of Gruha Lakshmi, the illuminated Vidhana Soudha, Mysuru Palace, Suvarna Vidhana Soudha and other landmarks showed a striking tribute to the women beneficiaries of the programme.
