A 70-year-old man is said to have been physically assaulted on a government bus from Sringeri to Shivamogga by a woman who assaulted him over a seat she claimed was reserved for a senior citizen. The incident occurred on a KSRTC Bus from the N.R. Pura route, which is managed by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation.

There had been an argument, it is said, over seating arrangements for elderly people, so a seat was reserved for the elderly person. Witnesses said later that the argument grew into a fierce verbal tussle, in which the woman was alleged to have verbally abused the old man before punching him by using derogatory words. It is said that the attack caused injuries to the left side of the man's forehead, which were also bloody, all up inside the bus.

Sitting in the bus, the passengers were shocked at the sudden violence and took quick action to stop it. Several commuters reported that the woman was so horrible for her acts as to eventually have taken her off the bus when everything in the street went haywire. It was reported that the elderly passenger was injured and distressed.

Other co-passengers attempted to dash in, though they were notified of the bus’s approach within striking distance of local law enforcement. The fight, though, sent tension and hassle through the journey, and residents and passengers reported it to the police. N.R. Pura Police Station Officers arrived at the scene of the incident and took the woman into custody for questioning.

Officials are investigating the incident and are also recording statements of passengers and witnesses who were on the bus at the time of the incident. Law enforcers are also expected to investigate for any videotape of the incident from passengers. Strong reactions to the startling attack on social media have been the result of several perspectives raising alarm over rampant intolerance and violent behaviour in public spaces.

At least some users have asked how a disagreement over a reserved seat would escalate into violence against a 70-year-old man. The elderly passengers should be treated with respect and security while travelling through public transport services, elder citizens groups and residents have advised and called for strict measures against the accused.

It demonstrates the way an older user's experience varies in crowded buses and public places. Seats for older passengers are set up to keep seniors safe and comfortable and stop them from getting hurt on long trips. KSRTC personnel and local authorities will likely investigate thoroughly to ensure it doesn’t happen again, the sources said.

Transport authorities, too, have been urging passengers to help educate the public about rules for reserved seating and for maintaining discipline in buses, the report said. The injured old man, on the other hand, is said to be recovering from the head injury.

There will be further legal action based on medical records and witness statements collected during the investigation, police officials said. The incident, however, has been distasteful to many of N.R. Pura taluk’s people, who have accused it of a cruel move to a senior citizen who never meant that even a minor issue would become one of violence.
