His wife, Gauri, 23, told the family that he had committed suicide. The family took this to make sense and cremated him. Suspicions subsequently emerged, which ended with an eye-catching confession.
On the day of the tragedy, Gauri called her father-in-law to say Lovekesh had taken his own life. The family did the last rites, devastated. Gauri sobbed for two days as if grieving for her husband. But relatives also observed something odd: When Lovekesh was discovered hanging, his feet were touching the ground. This cast doubt on the question of whether it was really suicide.
Family members asked why Lovekesh, who had a job, a loving family, and no apparent issues, would take his life. Gauri eventually confessed during questioning. She confessed that she engaged in an affair with her brother-in-law, Sundar. The murder was a coordinated act by the pair. They pushed a pillow against Lovekesh’s face until he suffocated, her confession says. And then they staged the scene to appear suicidal by hanging him from the ceiling fan with Gauri’s saree.
The truth shocked both family and community. Both Gauri and Sundar were subsequently arrested by police. The case highlights how betrayal and secrecy in relationships can result in dire consequences.
Lovekesh was said to be a responsible young man who loved his family and wife. He had a solid career and no incentive to think of self-sacrifice. His sudden death has devastated his family, and the secret of betrayal added to their suffering.
