In a landmark moment for Indian aviation, Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu inaugurated Air India's first Easy Connect hub-and-spoke flight from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, bringing about a new travel model for connecting Tier-II and Tier-III cities to global destinations.
The launch is a significant step in India's effort to democratize international air travel through which passengers from smaller cities can embark on their overseas travels from their hometown airports as they have been not the transit of the past.
A New Era of International Travel
The Easy Connect initiative is based on a hub-and-spoke model, with Delhi being the primary hub. To ensure that passengers leaving Varanasi can check in for their final international destination at their origin airport, complete immigration formalities before departure and travel through Delhi without rechecking baggage or repeating immigration procedures.
The inaugural Air India flight AI1111 departed Varanasi with passengers traveling to Dubai, Colombo, Jeddah, Riyadh, Kathmandu, and Phuket.
At the launch ceremony, Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu described the initiative as a major change in the way Indians travel internationally and described it as a game-changer in how we travel abroad.
"No matter where one lives in India, citizens can now begin their international journey from their home city and travel across the globe with ease and confidence on India's own wings," he said.
The initiative aims to eliminate one of the biggest challenges faced by travelers from non-metro cities—multiple check-ins, baggage transfers, lengthy transit procedures at major airports.
Boosting Connectivity Beyond Metro Cities
The Easy Connect model is consistent with the government’s larger aspiration to develop aviation infrastructure and to make air travel available to every region of the country.
The Minister underlined that India's aviation sector has witnessed unprecedented growth over the past 12 years. The number of airports has more than doubled, increasing from 74 airports in 2014 to over 160 today.
The expansion has been driven by airport modernization projects, regional connectivity schemes, and more airline participation in underserved markets. Importantly, the government has announced that six more airports will be added to the Easy Connect network in the next six weeks, bringing the program's reach across the country.

Varanasi Emerging as a Major Aviation Hub
During his visit, the minister also visited the new terminal building for Varanasi Airport, which is one of the most ambitious airport infrastructure projects being built in northern India.
The terminal project is approximately 48 percent complete and is being designed with architectural elements inspired by the Kashi Vishwanath temple, which reflects the cultural and spiritual identity of Varanasi.
The upgraded airport will dramatically increase passenger throughput with the ability to provide travelers with a very local experience.
Aside from the terminal expansion, plans are also being made to extend the airport's runway from 1,700 meters to 4,000 meters. When completed, the runway will be able to accommodate larger wide-body aircraft and support international operations.
What Easy Connect Means for Travelers
As passengers, the benefits of the new model are impressive:
- Single check-in from the origin to final destination
- Immigration clearance at the departure airport
- No baggage re-check during transit
- Faster and smoother international connections
- Greater access to global destinations from smaller cities
Industry experts believe that such a model could fundamentally remake international air travel in India given that it would bring world-class connectivity to cities that previously relied heavily on metro airports.
Since India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, the launch of Easy Connect means much more than a new flight service; it means a much broader transformation in how millions of Indians will connect with the world in the years to come.
