A major aviation scare ended safely on Thursday morning when Air India Express flight IX 398, en route from Jeddah to Kozhikode, was forced to divert to Cochin International Airport due to a critical technical snag involving its landing gear.
The Incident
While the aircraft was cruising toward its destination in Kozhikode, the pilots detected an issue with the right main landing gear. Recognizing the potential risk, the flight crew immediately alerted Air Traffic Control (ATC) and requested a diversion to Kochi, which offers superior emergency response facilities.
Emergency Protocols Activated
Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) declared a "full emergency" ahead of the arrival. Fire tenders, medical teams, and secondary rescue units were stationed along the runway as the aircraft approached.
The plane touched down safely at 9:07 AM. A post-landing inspection confirmed that both tyres on the right-side landing gear had burst, validating the crew's decision to seek an emergency landing.
Passenger Safety and Onward Travel
All 160 passengers and crew members were evacuated safely without any reported injuries. CIAL officials confirmed that the runway was briefly closed to clear debris but was reopened shortly after for regular operations.
The airline has moved the passengers to the airport lounge and is currently arranging for an alternative flight or ground transportation to Kozhikode to ensure they reach their final destination.
