Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu met with senior officials from the Central government to discuss measures for tobacco farmers in the face of fluctuating prices, falling exports and changing global demand.
The meeting was to find ways to help farmers’ livelihoods and make India’s tobacco industry stronger.
Tobacco cultivation is a major factor in Andhra Pradesh's agriculture sector, particularly in Prakasam, Bapatla and Palnadu. Thousands of farming families depend on tobacco cultivation as their primary source of income. But unpredictable markets, rising cultivation costs and international regulations have put pressure on growers.
The Chief Minister Naidu told the press that he requested the Centre for financial and policy support for tobacco farmers. He spoke about price realization, more export opportunities and stabilization of the domestic market in a more efficient manner, and the Government of India's support for financial and policy support of tobacco farmers. For fair returns on their product and quality, the state government stressed the importance of fair return.
The Centre claimed to have assured the Andhra Pradesh government of its commitment to addressing the concerns of tobacco growers. In addition to improving procurement processes, expanding export markets and improving coordination with the Tobacco Board of India to safeguard farmer interests.
One of the most important issues was a decline in international demand due to tighter tobacco regulation in several countries. Farmers have also been impacted by excess production and fluctuating auction prices.
The state government believes that coordination between the Centre and the state can lead to better market stability and less uncertainty for growers.

The meeting also discussed ways to diversify market opportunities and encourage value addition in tobacco production. Logistics and export processes were also discussed and high-quality tobacco cultivation was promoted. These measures are meant to make India more competitive in the world tobacco market.
In addition to economic support, discussions also covered modern farming practices and technological advances that can improve crop quality while lowering production costs. Government agencies should work together to provide better advisory services and training to farmers to improve productivity.
A dialogue between the Andhra Pradesh government and the Centre has been welcomed by the farmers and they hope policies are made right now to provide a little relief and to help farmers in the country, they said.
Many farmers have been calling for stable auction prices, easier access to financial assistance and more export promotion.
Tobacco is a significant sector in Andhra Pradesh, employment, exports and rural development. Any policy to encourage growth in tobacco cultivation and processing would benefit thousands of farmers and workers.
The outcome of this full-scale collaboration is useful in developing a package for farmers’ welfare in these changing market conditions.
