In a major breakthrough against identity fraud, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested the alleged mastermind behind a fake Aadhaar card racket in West Bengal.
The arrest is seen as a significant step in dismantling an organized network involved in creating forged identity documents which could potentially be misused for criminal activities.
The accused was working on the creation and sale of fake Aadhaar cards with forged documents and unauthorized software, officials said.
Initial investigations indicate that the network was in place for a period of time and was issuing many fake identity cards to people for money.
ATS launched the operation after receiving intelligence on suspicious Aadhaar registrations and forged identity documents being circulated in different parts of the state. The team then followed up in a weeks-long investigation and conducted a raid and found the mastermind and arrested him.
So far investigators have recovered computers, printers, biometric devices, forged documents, storage drives and other digital equipment that were used in preparing fake Aadhaar cards. These electronic devices have been sent for forensic examination to determine the scale of the operation and identify additional suspects.

The racket may have helped people acquire fake identities, which could be used to open bank accounts, obtain SIM cards, receive government benefits, or to fraudulently obtain financial benefits, officials say. The investigators are also investigating the network of criminals in other states.
ATS has registered a case under relevant sections related to forgery, cheating, criminal conspiracy, and provisions of the Aadhaar Act and the Information Technology Act. The accused are being questioned to find other members of the network including document suppliers, middlemen, and beneficiaries.
Law enforcement agencies have emphasized that identity fraud poses a serious threat to national security and public welfare. Not only do fake identity documents facilitate financial crimes, but anti-social elements can exploit them as well to evade law enforcement agencies.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has repeatedly advised citizens to use only authorized Aadhaar enrolment and update centres. They also advise people not to share biometric information or personal documents with unauthorized agents delivering quick Aadhaar-related services.
The ATS has asked the public to be vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity involving fake identity documents. Records are being checked to determine whether similar fake Aadhaar cards were issued in neighboring states.
There are more arrests to come, and more digital evidence was seized during the operation as officials analyze the digital evidence seized during the operation, the government said.
The crackdown is in line with the government’s ongoing effort to reduce identity fraud and make India’s digital identification system as secure as possible.
