In a heartbreaking incident that underscores the dangers faced by migratory seasonal workers, four people, including a two-year-old child, lost their lives in a horrific tractor accident in the early hours of today. The tragedy occurred near Katte Kere in Jamakhandi taluk of Bagalkote district, Karnataka.
According to local authorities, the accident took place around 2:00 AM when a group of laborers was traveling in a tractor-trailer to reach a sugarcane field for harvesting work. The peaceful night turned into a scene of carnage when the coupling connecting the trailer to the tractor suddenly snapped, causing the heavily loaded trolley to overturn violently.
The victims have been identified as 23-year-old Manish Pandey, 27-year-old Lakshmi Chiramadi, Rekha Bhuke, and a toddler, 2-year-old Halki Pandey. All the deceased were residents of Gupavadi village in the Busa taluk of Yavatmal district, Maharashtra. These families had traveled hundreds of kilometers from their home state to Northern Karnataka, a region known for its vast sugarcane plantations, seeking seasonal employment during the harvest peak. The impact of the overturn was so severe that all four individuals sustained fatal injuries and reportedly died on the spot before any medical help could reach the remote location.
Preliminary investigations by the Jamakhandi police suggest that the mechanical failure of the tractor's hitch was the primary cause of the disaster. Sugarcane harvesting often requires laborers to move between fields during the night to maximize productivity during the cooler hours, frequently using tractors that may not be equipped for safe passenger transport.
The sudden detachment of the trolley on the uneven terrain near the lake (Katte Kere) left the passengers with no time to jump to safety. Local residents who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash described it as a gruesome sight, with the victims trapped under the weight of the overturned vehicle.
The Jamakhandi police reached the spot shortly after being alerted and oversaw the recovery of the bodies, which were later shifted to a local government hospital for post-mortem examinations.
