A tragic road accident near Jajarakal Toll Plaza on the Ballari-Bengaluru National Highway killed a truck driver after two heavy vehicles collided and burst into flames. This happened in D. Hirehal Mandal area of Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district near the Karnataka-Andhra Pradesh border, sending shock waves through the region.
According to initial information from police officials, a cement tanker had been parked on the roadside after a tyre puncture. The vehicle was parked at the toll plaza on National Highway 150A while efforts were being made to deal with the mechanical issue.
As the tanker remained parked, another truck coming from the Rampuram side approached the site. For reasons that are still not known, the moving truck collided with the stationary cement tanker with great force. The impact of the collision was so strong that both vehicles instantly caught fire.
Witnesses said they heard an explosion-like sound from the scene. In a matter of seconds, flames spiralled in both trucks, causing panic among motorists and toll plaza workers. Thick black smoke rose into the sky from a long distance.
Deekshit, 22, was trapped in the cab of the moving truck after the collision. Because of the extreme fire intensity and rapid spread of the flames, he was unable to escape from the burning truck. Police officials later confirmed that the driver died in the cabin and was burned alive in the fire.
The accident prompted an immediate emergency response. In the immediate wake of the incident, fire and rescue teams from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh rushed to the site. Firefighters did a thorough job of keeping the fire under control and preventing it from spreading.
The firefighters faced huge challenges because of the intensity of the fire and the combustible materials involved. After some hours of firefighting, the fire was extinguished and the accident site secured.
Police investigators soon began to investigate what caused the collision. Preliminary evidence suggests that the parked tanker's presence on the roadside may have played a role in the accident, along with driver visibility, road conditions, and any mechanical problems.
As a result of the incident, traffic on the busy Ballari-Bengaluru Highway was severely affected. Long lines of cars formed near the toll plaza where emergency teams were still working to clear vehicles after the accident.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the threat faced by heavy vehicle drivers on the highways, particularly when disabled vehicles are parked on road shoulders. Road safety experts have long emphasised the importance of warning signs, reflective markers, and emergency safety measures for stranded vehicles to decrease the possibility of accidents.
Residents and motorists grieved for the tragic loss of life, and many felt anxious to see more safety measures around toll plazas and highway maintenance zones.
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the accident. Officials are expected to analyse evidence from the scene and gather statements from witnesses about what happened in such a horrible collision.
The truck driver’s tragic death underlines that the highway is a dangerous place and that better safety systems must be put in place for motorists and workers in India’s busy road networks.
