Karnataka politics has been rocked by the death of the party’s senior leader and former School Education Minister B.C. Nagesh. He was a leader of the BJP and a figure in local politics for decades, and worked in public life (education and government services), and at the grassroots level as well.
B.C. Nagesh, who was Bellur Chandrashekharaiah Nagesh, as Karnataka’s Minister for School Education and Literacy, was responsible for the education policy and implementation of the school education system under Basavaraj Bommai's government from 2021 to 2023. He was also part of the Sakala department and belonged to the BJP leadership in Karnataka.
Nagesh, born in Tumakuru district, started his political career due to student activism and joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in his youth. Eventually, he joined the BJP in 1984 and rose through the ranks of the party. He was one of the party’s most well-known leaders in Old Mysuru and was very popular among the electorate.
Nagesh represented the Tiptur Assembly constituency and was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly several times. His political career was characterised by his emphasis on education, rural development, agriculture, and infrastructure projects. He was often referred to as a friendly and communicative leader who listened to the citizens of his constituency.
As news of his death spread from leaders of other parties and from all parties, condolences poured in from politicians in all spheres. Senior BJP leaders, former colleagues, and political opponents alike expressed sorrow for the loss of a politician who worked hard for decades in public service and was a politician who had been working for decades in government schools of Karnataka.
Social media has been used by party workers and supporters to pay tribute to the former minister as well and write glowing tributes to him and share their fond memories of his leadership and achievements. We expect a number of BJP units in Karnataka to organise condolence meetings in his memory.
The last rites of B.C. Nagesh will be held tomorrow, family and party leaders say, and thousands of supporters, political leaders, and well-wishers are to come together to pay their last respects. His body will be laid out in public homage before the funeral procession is due to start.
Now Karnataka politics has lost a veteran leader whose influence extended beyond electoral politics to governance and public policy. He was an education advocate and was instrumental in building the BJP’s presence in the state.
B.C. Nagesh leaves behind a legacy of service to the people, political dedication, and commitment to education. A state like Karnataka is losing one of its most experienced politicians, but many tributes are coming from all over the state, and they are so worthy of being remembered as being the great leader of our people.
