A major road accident took place on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48) near Hirebagewadi in Karnataka’s Belagavi district due to a huge truck that lost control and went through the road divider. There is no major loss of life or serious injuries so far in the accident, but the accident was not as serious and could have been tragic for a very busy highway; not a single vehicle was involved in the accident.
It was very rainy weather, and the road conditions were slippery, and visibility was poor. The collision caused a temporary disruption to traffic, prompting police officers to rush to the scene and control vehicle movement.
Truck Loses Control in Rain
According to initial information, the truck was travelling along the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway when the driver lost control near the Hirebagewadi junction. The vehicle crashed into the central divider with considerable force.
Although the truck received damage, the driver escaped without life-threatening injuries. There is no official explanation as to what happened yet, but wet roads and lack of visibility due to heavy rainfall are believed to have been the cause of the accident.
Accident-Prone Stretch Raises Concern
The Hirebagewadi stretch has been in the news because more accidents are happening in the area now, and the commuters and residents are worried.
Officials and residents say five other road accidents have occurred in the last three days at or near the same location. The repeated incidents have only fueled calls for better road safety measures, better traffic management, and better warning systems for motorists.
Drivers frequently use this highway for interstate transport between Karnataka and Maharashtra, and it is one of the busiest freight and passenger routes in southern India in terms of traffic.
Police Struggle to Manage Traffic
After the accident, traffic police worked in difficult weather conditions to control the traffic flow and alleviate congestion.
With heavy rain continuing throughout the day, officers diverted traffic where required, and the damaged truck was cleared safely from the highway. Drivers were instructed to slow down, stay safe on rain-soaked roads, and reduce speed on wet roads.
Heavy vehicle drivers should take extra care in curves, junctions, and accident-prone stretches, police warned.
Need for Improved Road Safety
The recent accidents have emphasized the need for better safety on this portion of the national highway. Road safety experts say that additional warning signs, better drainage systems, reflective lane markings, speed monitoring, and better illumination might lower accidents, especially during the monsoon season.
With heavy rain in many parts of Karnataka, officials are advising commuters to avoid overspeeding, keep headlights on during poor visibility, and follow traffic advisories.
Fortunately, there was no loss of life in the recent accident. But the frequent mishaps in the vicinity of Hirebagewadi only serve to highlight the need for cautious driving and enhanced road infrastructure to ensure the safety of all road users.
