A 32-year-old woman died in a car accident near Bengaluru’s outskirts when she fell off a motorcycle on a pothole-ridden road and was struck by a goods vehicle as she tried to avoid a mishap. That accident occurred just outside Hebbagodi town in Anekal taluk, not far from Hebbagodi, and shows that road safety and commuters on roads in the city’s fast-growing suburbs are more and more worried.
The deceased was Medha, a Kerala resident working at the Employees’ Provident Fund office in Electronic City. Medha was riding her motorcycle with her friend Ajay Guru at the time of the accident in Ananth Nagar, a busy residential and commercial area in Electronic City.
Police and eyewitness accounts indicate that the motorcycle was being driven along the road when a car moving ahead suddenly applied the brakes. The bike rider lost control of the bike at that moment. The uneven road surface and huge potholes in the area also contributed to the loss of balance. Medha, who was riding pillion, fell off the motorcycle and fell onto the road.
A goods vehicle from behind wasn’t able to stop and ran over the woman in seconds when tragedy struck. Medha was badly injured and died before emergency medical help was available. Residents and commuters were shocked by the accident, and many gathered on the scene soon after the collision.
The tragedy brings to light again the bad roads in Ananth Nagar and the surrounding area. Residents say the main road passing through the area is filled with potholes, uneven surfaces and damaged sections of road that are dangerous for drivers on both sides (two-wheelers and other vehicles). Residents say repeated complaints about the road’s state have not led to sufficient repairs or long-term solutions.
Accidents have increased in the area because road maintenance is bad, residents say. Potholes can form in rainy weather when water fills the roads, making skidding and vehicle control more likely.
