On the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi, the GBA announced a complete ban this month on the slaughter and sale of meat in Bengaluru. The GBA will ban animal slaughter in its jurisdiction in preparation for the festival, and the ban will apply to slaughterhouses and meat shops under the authority's jurisdiction.
The Deputy Director of the GBA's Animal Husbandry Department has issued an official circular telling all slaughterhouses under the GBA jurisdiction to stop animal slaughter on that day. At the same time, meat shops in the city have been told not to sell meat. The order covers the entire GBA area and requires both members of the public and meat traders to strictly comply with the restrictions.
The enforcement of the ban on animal slaughter and the sale of meat will be strict. Traders and establishments are warned against violating the order, and everyone is encouraged to follow the orders to be in cooperation with the administration during the festival. Temporary restrictions will keep up for the entire day on September 14.
The announcement comes as Bengaluru gears up for large-scale Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. With thousands of devotees expected to participate in prayers, processions and idol immersion activities at different locations, civic authorities are also focusing on crowd management, public safety, traffic regulation and environmental protection.
Besides the meat ban, the GBA has carried out extensive planning for environmentally friendly Ganesh idol immersion at the Kalyani area of Halasuru Lake. The GBA has made sure that devotees can bring their Ganesha idols in for immersion at the same time as keeping the safety and environmental conditions in mind.
Only clay-based and environmentally friendly Ganesha idols will be permitted at the Halasuru Lake facility. Idols made of POP (Plaster of Paris) have been totally banned. The purpose of this is to prevent water pollution and reduce the environmental impact of immersion of non-biodegradable idols.

Public safety facilities have been established at the immersion site. These include CCTV cameras for surveillance, round-the-clock crane services for idol immersion, ambulance services in case of emergencies, electric lighting and drinking water facilities. Traffic control measures will also be implemented around the area to keep devotees and vehicles moving in the area for immersion.
The civic authorities have also released the schedule for idol immersion at Halasuru Lake. Immersion will be permitted on September 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 27 and 28. On September 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 and 25, immersion will be temporarily suspended for cleaning and maintenance of the facility.
Bengaluru civic authorities are advising residents to follow immersion dates and cooperate with personnel working with them at the location. POP idols are particularly critical for management to protect the lake so that waste and harmful materials do not get into the water.
