The ongoing tensions involving Israel, United States, and Iran are now beginning to impact daily life in India, with the effects reaching kitchens in Bengaluru. A shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has already forced some hotels and eateries to shut down temporarily, and now cooking oil shops are also facing supply disruptions.
Over the past four to five days, the supply of commercial LPG cylinders has reportedly been irregular across parts of the city. Hotel owners say they are struggling to keep their kitchens running, and several small restaurants and roadside eateries have already closed due to the lack of gas cylinders.
Amid the gas shortage, cooking oil traders are now raising concerns about reduced supply of edible oils. According to shop owners, they have been facing supply issues for nearly a week.
One cooking oil shop owner said that when they place orders for 100 to 200 boxes of cooking oil, distributors are delivering only 20 to 50 boxes. When traders ask the reason, agents claim that supplies are limited and they cannot provide more stock.
The supply crunch has also triggered a price increase of ₹15 to ₹20 per box, adding further pressure on traders and businesses.
Impact on Hospitals and Food Vendors
The shortage of commercial cylinders has even affected food outlets near Victoria Hospital. Food stalls operating inside the hospital premises are now offering only a limited menu such as rice, sambar, and rice bath, while items like Chinese dishes and tandoor preparations have been temporarily stopped.
Vegetable Market Also Affected
The ripple effect of the shortage has reached KR Market, one of the city’s biggest vegetable trading hubs. With many hotels and darshinis closed due to the gas shortage, vegetable vendors say demand has dropped sharply.
Traders at the market reported that fewer hotel owners are coming to purchase vegetables, leading to slower business and concerns about losses if the situation continues.
Industry experts say disruptions in global energy supply chains and shipping routes due to geopolitical tensions can affect fuel availability and logistics, which may eventually impact commodities and daily essentials.
If the shortage persists, Bengaluru residents and businesses could face further challenges in the coming days as supply chains struggle to stabilize.
