Bengaluru: In response to the chronic problem of potholes in Bengaluru, Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has launched a ₹2-crore pilot project using Jet Patcher machines to fix smaller potholes faster and more scientifically.
The new technology was demonstrated on the Vidhana Soudha–MS Building road and is one step in bringing in a more efficient process to fix smaller potholes in the city.
The idea is to reduce the time to repair minor road damage and allow traffic to resume as quickly as possible. The machines are expected to be evaluated by the authorities during the pilot with a view to wider rollout across the five corporations of the city.
How Jet Patcher Machines Work?
Jet Patcher technology is specifically designed to fix smaller potholes and damaged sections of roads. The process is mainly to clean the ground before filling it with cold-mix bitumen. Then the substance is compacted and forms a firm patch.
According to the pilot's details, the technology is able to repair road damage up to 50 mm in depth. A big part of the advantages is the speed of the repair process, and traffic will be restored in about 10 minutes after a patch is completed.
This could be especially useful for busy Bengaluru roads, where conventional repair work can cause traffic disruption and the road sections have to be shut down for longer periods.
₹2 Crore Pilot Project
The state government has allocated ₹2 crore for the pilot project. The first demonstration on the Vidhana Soudha–MS Building stretch is intended to give authorities an opportunity to see if the machines can carry out durable and efficient repairs under Bengaluru's road conditions.
If the pilot is successful, the project will be expanded to all five city corporations.
The wider deployment could give civic authorities another tool for dealing with potholes—especially smaller ones that can develop fast due to weather conditions, traffic pressure and wear and tear.
Focus on Faster Road Maintenance
Potholes have long been a major civic concern in Bengaluru. In addition to driving issues, damaged roads slow people up, increase congestion and make it more difficult for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
A quicker repair mechanism would help civic agencies process complaints more efficiently. The Jet Patcher approach also seeks to make the repair process more systematic rather than just a matter of the conventional approach.
A patch that is completed fast would be particularly important on roads with heavy traffic. Instead of long repair work, small damaged areas may be repaired with shorter interruptions.
But the long-term success of the initiative will depend on more than the speed of the machines.
Mohandas Pai Raises Questions About Implementation
Mohandas Pai has cautioned that machines alone may not solve Bengaluru’s road problems. Strong teams, systems and processes along with new technology are key, he said.
His observation highlights a crucial aspect of road maintenance. Even advanced equipment needs trained personnel, proper planning, quality materials, regular monitoring and timely identification of damaged road sections.
The success of the pilot will therefore depend not only on the performance of the Jet Patcher machines, but also on how well authorities integrate the technology into their wider road-maintenance system.
Can Jet Patcher Improve Bengaluru Roads?
The pilot is a technological approach to one of Bengaluru’s most visible infrastructure problems. It has gotten those road conditions better if quick repairs can result in fewer complaints about potholes, and local people have welcomed such improvements.
The project needs to be able to deliver meaningful results, but authorities will need to monitor the durability of repaired sections and to see whether the approach still works in heavy traffic and in changing weather conditions.
The pilot could also help officials to identify the types of potholes for which Jet Patcher technology is most appropriate. Despite these machines being developed for minor road damage, larger or badly damaged stretches could still require conventional engineering solutions and more extensive reconstruction.
A Possible New Approach to Civic Repairs
The Bengaluru government’s Jet Patcher campaign is ultimately about combining technology and quicker civic response. The ₹2-crore pilot will enable us to test if machine-assisted repairs can help to improve the city’s pothole management system.
If successful, expansion across all five city corporations could give Bengaluru’s road authorities a faster option for addressing smaller potholes before they become larger problems.

For residents, the real measure of success will be visible on the roads: smoother surfaces, quicker repairs and fewer recurring potholes. Machines can be a tool in the toolbox for innovation, but there is no quick fix, and long-term improvement will come from good maintenance teams and processes that are well managed and ensure quality.
