A dramatic alleged kidnapping attempt in Bengaluru ended in a car chase, multiple collisions and arrests of three men from Rajasthan after a 21-year-old woman was allegedly forced out of her home after her marriage against her family’s wishes.
Police and media reports told us that the woman, Pooja, married the 23-year-old Om Prakash of Rajasthan, who had been married around eight to nine months ago, and then moved to Bengaluru and lived in a rented house in the Agrahara Dasarahalli area. Their family had opposed the marriage, and they married despite their families' opposition.
At the couple’s house in a Hyundai Venue, four men allegedly arrived on Wednesday evening and took Pooja away. Police are investigating whether the men were sent by her family in Rajasthan to bring her home.
Pooja’s screams were heard by neighbours, and they tried to stop the car. The men fled out of the area, and a chase began, with neighbours following the vehicle.
The attempted escape vehicle collided with several other cars, according to the report, and six people were injured, including two children, aged 9 and 12. At least one of the injured women, Jayalakshmi, was injured in the head, and she was admitted to the intensive care unit, the report said.
The car was eventually stopped near Hosahalli after locals intervened. People chased the car and tried to stop it from escaping, said the local report. Pooja was rescued and handed over to the police.
Police have identified four men involved in the incident as Saddam, Rakesh, Karan and Ayan. Rakesh, Karan and Ayan have been arrested, while Saddam, who was driving the vehicle, is still at large, police said. The Hyundai Venue used in the incident has also been seized.

The incident is being investigated as an alleged kidnapping and is linked to the family’s opposition to Pooja’s marriage. Police are investigating how the men got to the couple’s Bengaluru residence and the possible involvement of family members in trying to bring the woman back to Rajasthan.
Some reports have described the marriage as an inter-caste marriage, with Pooja telling police that her family opposed her decision to marry a man from another caste. According to Times of India reports, she told police her family had traced her to Bengaluru and was trying to force her to return to Rajasthan.
Other accounts are mixed regarding the sequence of events and the number of vehicles involved in collisions. Police-confirmed reports currently say six people were injured and some eyewitness accounts have claimed that a larger number of people were hurt in the chaotic pursuit. Meanwhile, the authorities are still trying to determine the full facts.
The case also raises fears that couples who are being opposed to getting married by their families will be in danger. In this case, the report that the woman was taken from Bengaluru by force led to a police investigation and even injuries to people in public.
The three men arrested are being questioned as investigators try to understand the entire chain of events -- who arranged the alleged abduction and what role all of them play. The search for the alleged driver who remains absconding is also ongoing.
