Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s six-day visit to the UK has led to investment commitments of ₹15,300 crore with the projects expected to create more than 10,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities in the state according to an official announcement on September 17, 2026.
The visit aimed at getting international investment to the state, business contacts and industrial and economic cooperation with foreign companies.
The investment commitments are in several areas, from automobile components, design and engineering, manufacturing, logistics, renewable energy, power equipment, research and development and Global Capability Centres. The announcement is part of Tamil Nadu’s larger strategy to attract investment in manufacturing and high-value services and to create jobs.
Samvardhana Motherson International and its European and UK-based partners made some of the largest commitments during the UK visit. The company has committed ₹11,000 crore to work in design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly and logistics. The investment is expected to create around 7,000 jobs and is the biggest individual commitment reported from the visit.
Wilson Power Solutions also announced an investment of ₹300 crore in Tiruvallur district. The proposed project will focus on manufacturing power-grid equipment and transformers and will generate around 400 jobs. And these investments could improve the industrial ecosystem in Tamil Nadu and the supply chain of manufacturing components.
The state also received a Letter of Intent from a European automotive component manufacturer showing an investment of ₹3,000 crore. The company has selected Tamil Nadu as a preferred location for the investment to be made, according to a report. The future of this commitment is on the basis of a Letter of Intent but will be based on successful project development and formalization.
Tech and knowledge-intensive services were also on the agenda during the visit. Sweden-based Sigma Technology Group, through its Indian arm Sriya Solutions, announced plans to expand its Global Capability Centres in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli. The expansion is expected to generate around 600 high-value positions where embedded systems and industrial digitalisation are at the heart.
Ernst & Young also signed an agreement to establish a Global Capability Centre in Chennai. The project will cost around ₹1,000 crore and will bring in more than 2,000 high-value jobs. The development is the result of Tamil Nadu and other cities as a whole that are increasingly dependent on technology, professional services and corporate support.
Vijay also met Indian officials and business representatives, and discussed trade opportunities, as part of the India-UK economic relationship. The visit was focused on the development strategy of Tamil Nadu, and international companies to invest in Tamil Nadu.
One of the other aspects of the trip was Tamil Nadu’s Motor Sports City. Vijay visited the Silverstone Circuit, where he learned about the racing facility and the infrastructure there. The visit was linked to Tamil Nadu's plans for a world-class motorsports facility, which were unveiled in the state Assembly recently. Ajith Kumar was also present at Silverstone, according to reports.
The Tamil Nadu government has also linked the investment drive to its longer-term economic ambitions, with a stated roadmap to transition the state towards a USD 1.5 trillion economy by 2036. So the new commitments are being presented as part of a wider plan which involves manufacturing, technology, energy and services.

It is important to distinguish between investment commitments and actual investment inflows. The ₹15,300 crore figure is MoUs, agreements and a Letter of Intent announced during the visit. The economic impact on the project will come from the implementation of the proposals, capital expenditure and actual employment generation.
With the UK visit now over, efforts will turn to implementation and monitoring of the projects. The state government will have to accommodate the approvals, the infrastructure, all those things that are required for the projects to take place so that they can take place. If implemented as announced, the projects could help to generate manufacturing, technology services as well as create employment in many parts of Tamil Nadu.
