A viral video from a government hospital in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has triggered a probe after a doctor's driver was allegedly seen checking patients and writing prescriptions in the outpatient department. The incident reportedly took place at Kanshi Ram Combined Hospital and Trauma Centre while the emergency medical officer was away from the hospital.
The video shows the driver talking to patients about their health problems and writing drugs on prescription slips. The footage raised questions about how a young person without medical training was allowed to be in charge of patients and prescribe medicines in a government healthcare facility.
The Doctor Was Reportedly Away For Court Proceedings.
The incident occurred when Emergency Medical Officer Dr Ramkesh was at the court in connection with a case. In his absence, his driver, identified as Dev, was seen sitting in the OPD and calling patients one by one.
In the video, the man seems to ask patients about their complaints, including stomach pain and other discomforts. He then appears to write medicines on their prescription slips. Some of the patients were told to buy the prescribed medicines at a medical store outside of the hospital, reports said.
The incident was reported to have attracted more attention when the video came out online on Wednesday afternoon, and it started spreading on social media.
Dr Ramkesh later admitted to hospital authorities that the person seen writing prescriptions in the video was apparently his driver. He said he had gone to court to give evidence in a case.

The video caused the hospital administration to take notice of the incident and seek an explanation from the doctor.

Kanshi Ram Hospital CMS Dr Piyush Mishra asked for clarification from Dr Ramkesh about the circumstances in which his driver was allegedly treating patients in the OPD. Further incidents of such nature could be subject to disciplinary and legal action, including an FIR against the doctor involved.
Another report said the hospital administration has started an investigation and sought a written explanation from the doctor. The administration is also examining the circumstances surrounding the driver's presence in the OPD and the prescriptions shown in the viral footage.
The problem has raised patient safety concerns since diagnosis and prescription require proper medical training and knowledge of a patient’s medical history. Allowing an unqualified person to undertake such duties could potentially result in an incorrect diagnosis, inappropriate medication or dosage, or delays in receiving proper medical treatment.
Question Of Patient Safety And Hospital Oversight
The situation has also called attention to the control and staffing arrangements in government hospitals. The doctor had already gone to court, but the circumstances in which his driver took over interactions with patients are now under investigation.
The hospital administration will look into whether established procedures were violated as well as whether other staff members were aware of the driver's behavior.
The hospital had conducted an inquiry after receiving information about the video, but the individual was not found at the hospital during the follow-up check. The doctor's explanation identified the person in the video as his driver.
Officials have indicated that action could follow if similar negligence occurs again. So the episode has become not only a matter of individual accountability but of oversight in a public healthcare facility.
