As well as its accompanying events, a day-to-day Bengaluru political gathering degenerated into mayhem after a group of Bengaluru women in a crowd gathered to distribute sarees at an assembly, with confusion, panic and disorder and maybe even illegal acts. It was a party induction in Chelakere under KR Puram’s rule, and things turned quickly bad.
Karnataka minister Ramalinga Reddy also joined the party on the occasion when he attended a joining function for political parties, which had many participants in shifting alliances (it is reported). But what drew huge and often female crowds were the free sarees as well as food, including biryani.
Hundreds of women stood at the venue, several wanting sarees handed out in the plans for the event, according to reports. The confusion over the distribution of tokens caused things to go haywire. Some women stated they were invited but not given the tokens they needed to collect the sarees, so they fought and shoved through the crowd.
As they streamed, an alarming incident happened when a woman allegedly lost her gold earring. She cried and shook, saying, “I came for a saree, and I lost my gold,” and that’s the sad ending. The loss likely occurred in a stampede fashion, and people rushed forward to retrieve the merchandise they had to obtain.
Adding to the confusion, several women lamented little basic arrangements at the venue. Over a dozen people said drinking water had not been properly provided, which caused sweating among people alongside long lines of people. And the crowd response seemed inadequate to the number of attendees.
In terms of local reports, it is reported that many participants must have mobilised themselves for the mass audience in front of the minister, or in support of the party, by showing support among the masses. That inability to organise, organise, and direct the crowd led to disorder, and attention turned instead to the failure of what had been a political program that had failed to manage those who came.
Due to that, the event has been criticised by some, questioning the very organisation that went against the agenda in regard to safety measures, and even accountability. No injuries have been reported, but the emotional toll and losses endured by guests shone a light on the negative fallout of poorly executed public meetings.
It will also have had no official complaint filed about the lost gold earring, authorities said. The episode also has to remind us that, when an event distribution is the distribution of goods that pulls thousands into a room, it’s important to manage crowds.
