A horrific road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Markapuram district claimed the lives of at least eight people and left 18 others injured in the early hours of today. The tragedy unfolded near Rayavaram village when a private passenger bus collided head-on with a speeding tipper lorry, triggering a massive fire that gutted both vehicles within minutes.
The Incident: A Fiery Collision
The accident occurred between 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM near the slab quarries in Markapuram Mandal. The private bus, belonging to Harikrishna Travels, was reportedly en route from Nirmal (Telangana) to Nellore (Andhra Pradesh) carrying approximately 40 passengers.
According to preliminary police reports, the bus was negotiating a turn when a speeding tipper lorry, loaded with building materials, rammed into it. The impact was so severe that the fuel tanks of the vehicles likely ruptured, leading to an instantaneous inferno.
Casualties and Rescue Operations
Markapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nagraju confirmed the grim details to the media:
- Fatalities: At least 8 passengers were charred to death, unable to escape the rear section of the bus as flames spread rapidly.
- Injuries: Approximately 18 to 20 passengers sustained injuries, ranging from minor burns to critical conditions.
- Survivors: About 10 passengers seated in the front portion of the bus managed to jump out in time and escape the blaze.
Rescue teams from the police and fire departments rushed to the spot, battling the intense heat to retrieve bodies and shift the injured to a private hospital in Markapuram. Authorities have expressed concern that the death toll may rise as several victims remain in critical condition.
Government Response
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep shock and grief over the incident. He directed district officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the survivors and ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident, with over-speeding by the tipper lorry currently suspected as the primary factor.
Local MLA Kandula Narayana Reddy also visited the site to oversee the relief operations. Efforts are currently underway to identify the deceased, many of whom are believed to be residents of the Kanigiri region.
