A restaurant near Bengaluru has been shut down by police after customers were served beef and told it was mutton, the police said. The restaurant has been shut down, with two restaurant owners arrested.
The restaurant is called Kayaloram Restaurant, located at Isiri Hub in Bommanahalli near Budigere Cross. The alleged deception took place almost a year and a half before police discovered it, police said.
People who have been coming to the restaurant for dinner today (July 25) received mutton-based menus. And when they were eating the food, they became suspicious of the quality and kind of meat.
The customers were not satisfied with the explanation and contacted the Avalahalli police and asked them to check the restaurant. Based on the complaint, police arrived and did a preliminary inspection and found evidence that the meat being served as mutton was actually beef.
Police have opened up an investigation into the restaurant’s operations. Some customers probably had unknowingly eaten beef as they ordered and paid for mutton dishes, officials believe. And this case has put consumers’ rights, food labelling, and transparency at the centre of consumer concerns.
Police arrested two people working for the restaurant. They identified Jiju and Shibu as the owners or operators of the restaurant. In police interviews, the accused admitted to serving beef at the restaurant. But investigators were still trying to determine the full extent of the alleged practice and how long it had been happening.
The restaurant has been sealed for further investigation as part of the enforcement action. Food procurement, supply chains, and licensing are being looked at to see if more violations were committed. Laboratory testing of the meat is also being done to establish the truth.
The case drew strong media coverage, and food lovers are worried about the authenticity of food in restaurants. Food experts say consumers have a right to information about the ingredients and products they purchase. Food items that are sold to consumers are misleading for legal reasons.
Food safety and labelling regulations are advocated for restaurant operators, and any attempt to mislead customers will result in severe action. Food fraud or misrepresentation is also a concern to the public, authorities have said.
The Avalahalli police are investigating, and more legal action can proceed at the end of the investigation. We expect to get more information about what happened as the investigation continues.
