Bengaluru's Second International Airport Moves Closer: Kanakapura Road Emerges as Front-Runner

The Karnataka government has taken a major step towards developing Bengaluru’s second international airport as the city’s rapidly growing population, expanding economy and increasing air traffic continue to put pressure on the existing Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) at Devanahalli.

But at a high-level meeting at Vidhana Soudha attended by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, officials were briefed on the latest feasibility studies and shortlisted locations of the proposed airport. The meeting was held to identify a site that would meet Bengaluru's aviation needs for the next 20 years without any impact on the environment and society.

Three Key Locations Shortlisted

This was done after months of technical evaluation and feasibility studies. The government has now narrowed its search down to three locations:

Chudahalli on Kanakapura Road
Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road
The Nelamangala–Kunigal Road corridor

Chudahalli and Somanahalli were the leading contenders due to their geographical advantages, connectivity, and the availability of large contiguous land parcels, officials said.

Over 9,000 Acres Available

One of the major requirements for an international airport is the availability of vast, uninterrupted land.

According to officials:

  • Chudahalli has about 4,655 acres available.
  • Somanahalli has around 4,376 acres.

Together, these adjacent locations cover more than 9,000 acres, enough space for multiple runways, passenger terminals, cargo facilities, aircraft maintenance zones, logistics parks, and future commercial development.

Experts believe such a large land bank would enable Karnataka to build a world-class aviation hub capable of serving Bengaluru for decades.

The government focuses on minimal land acquisition

Land acquisition is still one of the most sensitive aspects of large infrastructure projects. At the meeting, D.K. Shivakumar instructed officials to follow two important principles while finalizing the site.

First, the government should focus on acquiring a minimum amount of privately owned land. Government land or barren land should be preferred at all times.

Second, officials were instructed to avoid major displacement of villages. The government will seek to locate a place in which the impact on local communities is small and rehabilitation can be carried out less painlessly.

The Deputy Chief Minister said infrastructure development should not be at the expense of unnecessary hardship for farmers or residents.

Environmental Concerns Around Bannerghatta

While Kanakapura Road has good infrastructure potential, one of the shortlisted locations— Somanahalli— is relatively close to Bannerghatta National Park, raising environmental concerns.

Airport construction and frequent aircraft use have been warned that wildlife movement, bird habitats, and the surrounding eco-sensitive zone are at risk. Noise pollution, more human activity, and ecological disturbance are among the concerns that should be looked into carefully.

So the government has directed officials to conduct an environmental impact assessment before finalizing a decision. If a site is selected, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change will also need to approve if it is environmentally sensitive.

Why Bengaluru needs a second airport?

Kempegowda International Airport has witnessed significant passenger growth over the last decade and is expected to approach its long-term capacity in the coming years despite ongoing expansion projects.

In an era of an increasingly international industry with Bengaluru still attracting major global technology companies, manufacturing companies, startups, and international investments, a second airport will become necessary to cater to future passenger and cargo demand.

A new airport could greatly improve regional connectivity, reduce congestion at the current airport, strengthen Karnataka's logistics network, and generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities.

It will also help to accelerate commercial and industrial development, tourism, and commercial development in the area.

Technical report to guide final decision-making

The Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said that the government had reviewed the progress made so far and instructed officials to prepare a revised technical feasibility report.

He said that the final location would be chosen based on several factors, such as minimum land acquisition, less displacement of villages, environmental sustainability, and long-term infrastructure requirements.

Next, officials will conduct detailed technical surveys, environmental assessments, and land evaluations before submitting the final proposal to the government.

A Major Milestone for Bengaluru's Future

The second international airport is one of Karnataka’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. If approved it will not only enhance Bengaluru's aviation capacity but also reinforce the city's position as India's leading technology and business hub.

While Chudahalli and Somanahalli are the two strongest contenders, the final decision is in the hands of technical feasibility, environmental clearances, and the government's ability to reconcile development with ecological conservation and public interest.
