Bengaluru to Get Vande Bharat Sleeper Depot at Thanisandra as Railways Begins Land Acquisition

Bengaluru is gaining a position as a major railway hub as Indian Railways will buy land for a Vande Bharat Sleeper train depot in Thanisandra in the fast-growing northern area of the city. The proposed facility will be the main maintenance and operation centre for the next generations of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, which will enable Indian Railways to invest in the long-distance rail service delivery of the highest quality.

The depot will be in charge of maintaining the new fleet of sleeper trains with all that they need to be safe, efficient, and ready to run in a day. Railway officials are beginning to map out and buy the land for the project, the first step in establishing one of the country’s modern railway maintenance facilities.

Strategic location in North Bengaluru.

Thanisandra was chosen as the project site as it was located strategically and connected to Bengaluru’s existing railway network: the northern part of the city has witnessed rapid urban development in recent years and has become a major transportation route.

A dedicated maintenance depot in Thanisandra will reduce the time required to move trains to service, and thus make Indian Railways operationally efficient and the turnaround time between journeys shorter.

The facility will be able to support not only trains from Bengaluru but also services available in the south of India as the Vande Bharat Sleeper network expands.

Modern infrastructure for Next Generation Trains

The proposed depot will be equipped with advanced infrastructure developed specifically for the maintenance of Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets.

The facility will be operated as follows:

  • Routine maintenance and technical inspections.
  • Coach cleaning and sanitation.
  • Mechanical and electrical servicing.
  • Safety inspections.
  • Repairs and diagnostics.
  • Preparation of trainsets before departure.

Since the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains have modern technology and very high-level onboard systems, specialised maintenance infrastructure is necessary to ensure reliable and safe operation.

About the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains

The Vande Bharat Sleeper programme is the next phase of India’s railway modernisation initiative. In contrast to the current Vande Bharat chair car trains that are mainly used for day-to-day travel, the sleeper version is designed for overnight trips, which travel longer distances.

Passengers will have more upgraded features, such as:

Comfortable sleeper berths
Modern interiors
Enhanced passenger safety systems
Improved ride quality
Advanced climate control
Smart onboard amenities
Energy-efficient technology

The trains should enable faster travel as well as airline-like comfort for long-distance passengers.

Land Acquisition is the first phase

The ongoing land acquisition process is the first stage of the project. Once the required land is acquired, Indian Railways will proceed with statutory approvals, engineering designs, and construction activities.

Once completed, the depot will be a part of the operational ecosystem serving Vande Bharat Sleeper services in Karnataka and neighbouring states.

Railway officials think that dedicated maintenance depots are required to maintain the high standards expected from India’s premium train service.

Employment and Economic Benefits

The project is expected to create employment opportunities from construction to operation.

Construction will create jobs in civil engineering, infrastructure development, and allied fields. Once the depot is operational, it will need professionals in railway engineering, mechanical maintenance, electrical systems, operations management, and technical support.

The development would also benefit railway equipment manufacturers, maintenance companies, logistics companies, and logistics services businesses.

Boost to Bengaluru's Rail Infrastructure

The proposed Thanisandra depot is in line with Indian Railways’ long-term vision of providing high-speed and semi-high-speed rail services across the country. Dedicated maintenance facilities for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains to be run on the most crucial long-distance routes are needed for punctuality, reliability, and passenger safety to be ensured.

In Bengaluru, the project further solidifies the city as a transportation and infrastructure hub in southern India. The Vande Bharat Sleeper depot is expected to enhance connectivity and will enable the city to continue with the expansion of premium rail services to the city in the future.

With land acquisition now underway, the project has reached a key milestone, and Bengaluru is a key operational centre for India's next generation of overnight rail travel.
