A tragic incident in Bengaluru has left a family devastated after three-month-old twin baby girls were found dead in a home in the Vajrahalli area. Police have registered a murder case against the mother after their father filed a complaint with them.
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon at BCCHS Layout in Vajrahalli, the police said. Police said the woman attempted to take her own life after the deaths of the infants. Talaghattapura police have launched an investigation to determine exactly what happened inside the house.
Twins Were Born After IVF Treatment
According to the complaint, the couple, Ramalingappa and Umadevi, lived in BCCHS Layout at Vajrahalli. The couple had been taking IVF treatment, and Umadevi gave birth to twin girls on May 5.
The babies were only three months old when the tragedy took place.
Ramalingappa returned home on Tuesday afternoon and noticed that the door of a room was locked from inside, he said. Suddenly he became suspicious and tried to open the door. When his efforts failed, the door was forced open, police said.
Inside, he found Umadevi attempting suicide.
Twin Babies Found Dead in the Same Room
The two infants were found unresponsive in the room and were believed to have died after being submerged in water, according to police.
The babies were immediately taken to a hospital for medical examination. They were taken to Shankar Hospital, where doctors examined them. Police said the medical examination indicated that the infants had died due to drowning.
The children’s father then approached the Talaghattapura police station and made a complaint. In his complaint, he claimed his wife was responsible for the deaths of the babies.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Family Alleged Change in Mother's Behaviour After Childbirth
The complaint says Umadevi’s behavior changed after childbirth. The family also said she had no interest in caring for the babies and had been talking about sending the children to an ashram.
The family also sought psychiatric treatment for her after changes in her behaviour, they claimed.
According to the complaint, doctors had said her condition may be related to postpartum depression and hormonal changes. But police have not yet established whether any mental-health condition was involved in the deaths.
Investigators will look at medical records, statements from family members and other available evidence as part of their investigation.
Murder Case Registered Against Mother
Police said Umadevi attempted suicide after the deaths of the children. The Talaghattapura police have registered a case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the father's complaint.
The registration of a case and allegations in a police complaint do not in themselves establish guilt. Investigators will have to look into what happened in the house and what caused the deaths.
Police are investigating family members and other people connected with the case, and all the evidence is being examined as it is.
Investigation Underway
The deaths of the three-month-old twins have caused shock and grief in the Vajrahalli area. The fact that the children were born following IVF treatment has added to the family’s tragedy.
It has also made women’s postpartum care more important. However, investigators do not yet know whether the mother’s mental health problems were a factor in the incident.
For now, the circumstances of the deaths are still being investigated. And the complete picture will emerge only after police complete their investigation and medical and forensic evidence is examined.
