Bilaspur Assault Case: ASI Suspended After BJP Worker Beaten in Police Station

An alarming story from Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, India that triggered a national uproar as a BJP worker (Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP))  was allegedly assaulted in a police station by an ASI (Assistant Sub-Inspector). After the incident, police accountability and their conduct were challenged  and direct actions taken on the side of the authorities. The BJP worker allegedly approached the police station in that moment, when tensions were rising, with a local matter, it was reported. The ASI would then physically assault the subject and injure him or her, according to documentation during the discussion. The clash was an argument between either party or disputation, sources said.

It was something that got public attention immediately with learning, and which turned into fierce backlash from political figures and other locals. BJP members denounced the act; they described it as a “blatant abuse of power” at the time and demanded that action be taken against the officer under the law.

Social media attention to the matter was also rising, as people jumping online to monitor the safety of citizens nearby seemed concerned about a threat to them on police premises. The Chhattisgarh government responded with a revelation, suspending the implicated ASI and the latter soon thereafter. Officials have indicated explicitly they plan to conduct an in-depth investigation to see what’s real and accountable.

This investigation will continue amongst the senior police agencies as well. So there will be protocol and judgment when they go into each case, and they will make sure that the facts are up to date and verifiable and they know how to review the case. These are incidents that prove how important it is that police organizations stay disciplined and professional. Police stations are places the people go to get help, people go there to seek it out and people wait for justice, and if you don’t do that, then people lose the faith they have in our system, and so on.

Any form of custodial violence perpetrated by law enforcement officials nearly always against citizens is, legal scholars argue, an offence punishable under the criminal justice system. And what are their demands for transparency, that also surveillance systems such as CCTV cameras be fitted and installed, in order to prevent such thing from happening again.

Community members who fear police brutality could challenge accountability within the police. “The key now to this effort, and to conduct the conduct and discussion of the investigation, is we are scrutinizing the authority to be able to demonstrate without delay and fairly that justice has been served and that justice has been acted upon. It is this same case that could also set the tone for how similar events are managed and stoke a critical public and private conversation both of the public and the private people about police reform and accountability in the state.
