The political situation in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has heated up after widespread discussion to change the official transport arrangements for key municipal group leaders. Most of all however, administrative vehicle upgrades have crossed the line into luxury acquisitions and politicians are quick to respond.
The issue gained momentum as news that many of the city’s key elected representatives and civic office-bearers had been asking to replace Mahindra Scorpio-N SUVs with high-end Toyota Innova Crysta models came in. Opposition groups and others seized on that story and argued that spending huge public funds on high-end vehicle replacements was not justified at a time when the civic body needs to be financially responsible and tackling pressing problems with city infrastructure.
With public scrutiny and political fight on the rise, BJP Group Leader Ganesh Khankar categorically denied that his party or its representatives wanted luxury vehicles like the Innova Crysta. Formally addressing BMC Commissioner Abhijit Bangar via an official letter, Khankar maintained that the primary dialogue with the administration was operational in nature about the poor mechanical and physical state of the present fleet of vehicles rather than comfort upgrades.
Khankar said the discussions arose from conversations among municipal office-bearers (Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee members) and civic administrators who reported receiving many complaints about vehicle maintenance. He said the aim was simply to specify standard replacement mechanisms for aging cars and not to push for a particular luxury model. Khankar also added that the BJP group is happy with the current fleet and will continue working on the standard vehicles given by the civic authority without asking for any special adaptations.
The clarification of this is made as political parties continue to dispute administration expenses and asset management in municipal governance and the last clarification attempts to set aside the need to keep a clean line between routine vehicle maintenance and excess luxury upgrades. The administration’s handling of the transit proposal is still a significant topic of discussion about transparency, allocation of resources and accountability in Mumbai’s premier civic institution.
