A 33-year-old chartered accountant was found dead in a hotel room in Siddipet, Telangana, which led to a police investigation into the cause of death. The deceased was identified as Santosh, who worked for a private company in Hyderabad.
Santosh came to Haritha Hotel in Siddipet on August 1. Hotel staff discovered his room had been occupied for several days with no response from inside. A “Do Not Disturb” sign was hung on the door for some time, which was worrying to the staff.
After repeated attempts to contact the occupant failed, hotel officials informed the Siddipet Three Town Police Station. Police arrived at the room and found Santosh dead. A case has been registered, and investigators are investigating what happened in his death.
The newspaper reported that police found a two-page handwritten note during the investigation. Santosh had a long-term addiction to online gambling and was under heavy financial strain, the report said. The note indicated that mounting debt and financial strain had been one of the main sources of emotional distress, and the note showed that he was still very much in a financial bind.
Police said the contents of the note are still being investigated as part of the investigation and should not be considered as conclusive evidence until all inquiries are complete.
Santosh's mobile phones and other electronic devices have also been seized for forensic examination. Officials are looking at digital records, including online activity and financial transactions, to see how the timeline of events is laid out and verify the information available to investigators.
Police are investigating all possible angles (such as whether money from online gambling played a role), they said. But they stress that the investigation is still in its early stages and no conclusion will be reached until forensic reports, post-mortem findings, and other evidence are available.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the effects of online gambling and betting platforms, especially among young professionals. Mental health experts have warned that compulsive gambling can lead to significant financial losses, anxiety, depression, strained relationships, and other serious psychological challenges if left unaddressed.
Financial counsellors say gambling addiction leads to a perpetual cycle of debt, emotional stress, and isolation and must be addressed as soon as possible. They urge people with gambling-related financial problems to seek professional help, financial advice, or help from trusted family and friends before things get worse.
Experts also point out that gambling addiction and its early signs are a serious problem, and people with gambling addiction are at risk of becoming addicted to gambling in a rather short time frame that is often too late to start working on the problem and not in the right place to work on the problem at all, and gambling addiction can be emotional and psychological.
Police are not ruling out speculation from the public about the case while the investigation is ongoing. “A post-mortem, forensic examination, and digital evidence analysis will help establish the full sequence of events,” the department said.
