A horrific road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad has once again illustrated the need for road safety and motorists to be on their toes while travelling on public roads. The video (captured by a nearby CCTV camera) shows a motorcycle crashing through a car door that was suddenly opened by the driver of the vehicle, seriously injuring two people.
The accident happened on a busy road in Firozabad when a car driver stopped his vehicle on the roadside, the newspaper said. He got out of his car and opened the door without looking at the traffic approaching him. The motorcycle of two riders was being ridden at the same time. The speeding two-wheeler had no time to react and slammed right into the open door.
The CCTV footage shows the collision happening very fast in seconds. Both riders were thrown off the motorcycle and fell heavily onto the road from the impact. They were helped to the victims by bystanders immediately to get to the scene and call emergency services.
Witnesses said the accident caused panic among people in the area. The injured riders were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have said both people suffered serious injuries, but no other information has been released.
Experts say "dooring" accidents - where the driver of a vehicle opens a door in the path of an approaching cyclist or motorcyclist in an instant that could result in severe bodily injury - could be deadly. Two-wheeler riders are more prone to being injured by such an event because they have very little protection from the impact. Even at high speeds, a collision with suddenly opened doors of a car can result in fractures, head trauma, and internal injury, even at low speeds.

The incident has galvanised social media comments, on social media where users have also had different opinions on the issue, and people have been quick to say that basic safety precautions should be taken into account. Drivers and passengers must look through the mirrors of their vehicle and keep an eye on their mirrors and look over their shoulders before opening the doors always before stepping into vehicles when they are driving alone, because motorcycles, bicycles and other vehicles may be moving behind them just like we have seen that the vehicle and other vehicles are coming on bikes, or when they are driving at high speed from behind.
While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, the CCTV images help to hammer home how a single momentary lapse in attention can be fatal. Road safety experts say the drivers and riders are responsible for preventing accidents as they are behind the wheel. The driver should be aware of the traffic before opening the door; the riders should be moving at a safe speed and be on guard.
A simple safety rule is a good practice to be followed on urban streets, as so many people are putting their lives at risk. Firozabad’s situation not only shows us that we need to be mindful, aware, and safe (driving behaviour is a fact; we need to be safe on the road).
