Chamarajanagar, Karnataka: Chamarajanagar’s historic town is getting ready for the Chamarajeshwaraswamy Rathotsava, one of the state’s most precious religious events, as last-minute preparations are going on for the temple administration and local authorities.
Chamarajeshwaraswamy Rathotsava is also a unique event in the cultural and religious calendar of Karnataka that is celebrated only once in the Ashada month, as it is the only chariot festival. For devotees from all over the state, it is one of the major spiritual events in South Karnataka.
One of the traditions unique to this Rathotsava is the relationship between newly married couples. According to local tradition, couples who live apart during the Ashada month reunite for this holy occasion and jointly pray to Lord Chamarajeshwara.
The festival has a special ritual: newlywed couples offer fruits and davana (an aromatic sacred herb) to the temple chariot as it moves through the streets. The devotees are convinced this ritual is based on faith and that it brings with it divine blessings, fulfills heartfelt wishes, and ensures a happy and satisfied married life.
Since this is a unique tradition, hundreds of newly married couples come every year from different parts of Karnataka to participate in the festival and seek the blessing of Lord Chamarajeshwara.
Chamarajeshwaraswamy temple has been beautifully decorated with flowers, traditional festoons and decorative lighting for the celebrations. The city’s famous Raja Veedhis (main ceremonial streets) have also been decorated to welcome devotees and visitors arriving for the Rathotsava.
Authorities have made elaborate arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the event. Security personnel, volunteers and temple staff have been deployed to control crowds and help the people during the celebrations. Cleanliness drives and improvements to public amenities are being conducted in the temple and the temple grounds.
The Rathotsava is not only a major religious event but also a cultural celebration that showcases Karnataka's rich heritage and age-old traditions. The festival offers devotees the opportunity to witness centuries-old customs while experiencing the spiritual atmosphere created by devotional music, traditional rituals, and community participation.
