A routine court-ordered eviction drive turned into a site of absolute horror in Chandigarh’s Sector 42 when peaceful property possession went wrong and a gun was fired. The incident has left the local community as well as the legal fraternity in a state of deep shock and highlighted just how dangerous enforcement teams and property owners are when bringing about just judicial decrees.
The Chandigarh Police reported that the joint team of local police and court officials arrived at a residential property in Sector 42 to carry out a court order to take possession of the property. But when the authorities came to the house to perform the court order, the occupant— a lawyer named JPS Chadha— refused to comply and opened fire from inside the house with the licensed double-barrel shotgun.
The sudden gunfire had catastrophic consequences. Just one bullet struck the property owner Manjinder Kaur in the mouth, causing serious and life-threatening injuries. Panic took hold of the area and police rushed to secure the scene and manage the situation. The injured woman was rushed to PGIMER under emergency care (the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research).
Senior law enforcement officials, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Dheeraj Kumar, rushed to the scene. Confirming the grim turn of events, DSP Kumar said that the police team was there with the court officials for the sake of law and order and was only there to carry out the legal possession order when violent resistance took place. The accused lawyer was quickly overpowered by police officers on the spot and taken into custody.
After the shooting, forensic science teams went to work to trace the trajectory of the bullet and collect ballistic evidence. Witness accounts and testimony from those in the vicinity of the execution drive were recorded as well as the judicial officials who were in charge of that program. Local police also began to check upon the legal status and licensing of the gun used in the attack.
