Heavy rainfall brought down Chandigarh to a standstill as waterlogging, traffic blockages and road damage to road infrastructure were reported to be a big problem for the city with waterlogging and road infrastructure and road damage throughout the city of Chandigarh as a whole with heavy rainfall brought to a standstill on Tuesday, August 18, and heavy rainfall brought heavy waterlogging, traffic disruption and road damage.

A substantial part of the road between Sector 26 and Sector 28 collapsed, making it very dangerous for commuters.

The road was also damaged and images on the internet showed that the road gave way after strong rains. The damaged part of the road was along Madhya Marg, a key route connecting several parts of Chandigarh.

Water still in several surrounding areas was accumulating and there were fears of commuters’ safety, it added.

The road collapse occurred after an exceptionally intense spell of rain across Chandigarh and the wider Tricity region. The city received around 72 mm of rain in two hours, starting in the evening and hitting during peak office hours. The heavy showers inundated roads and low-lying areas at a rapid rate.

Chandigarh saw a lot of waterlogging. The roads in and around Sectors 8, 10, 17, 22, 24, 25-38, 33, 34, 35, 43 and 56 were flooded and houses, shops and basements had water in them. It caused a lot of problems for people and traffic because cars were stranded on flooded roads.

The impact was particularly visible around Madhya Marg. Roundabouts and slip roads around Sectors 7, 8, 9 and 26 were submerged. A fallen tree also blocked a slip road near Sector 9, adding to the traffic problems.

The recent disaster has once again highlighted Chandigarh’s urban infrastructure in the face of the weather again shows the grit of Chandigarh’s urban areas’ ability to withstand extreme rainfall.

The city has a network of roads that is well-structured and well-established but with a big hole in the road network of the city can be very hard to get through when it rains so fast and the drainage systems and roads can be heavily damaged and the roads are affected.

So water accumulation around vulnerable stretches of the road can make the road ground worse and cracks, subsidence and collapse are likely to happen in case of the city so that roads break down with them, and in turn, the roads collapse.

The disruption was not limited to Chandigarh. Heavy rain was also affecting Panchkula and Mohali and bridges and roads were damaged in some parts of the Tricity.

The bridge between Alipur and Khatauli was partially damaged in Panchkula and we had to close down rainwater drains due to strong currents.

The road collapse is a reminder of the need for drivers to be cautious in heavy rain. Drivers should avoid flooded areas and damaged roads if possible and follow traffic advisories issued by authorities.

With the monsoon going on, residents will likely remain alert to a few more rainfall and waterlogging risk of further rain and waterlogging in and waterlogging are also expected to continue to occur as the rain continues.

The immediate priority for residents is likely to be on the front lines of the monsoon and the monsoon will probably continue to be a concern about rain and waterlogging.

The Sector 26 incident also highlighted how rapidly extreme rainfall can affect even major urban roads, which means that effective drainage, regular road inspections and quick response to a disaster can be critical during the monsoon season.
