As a result of the controversy, the city ended the service of two outsourcing sanitation workers and suspended a sanitary supervisor for lack of care.

The video reportedly showed one sanitation worker giving a massage to another while on duty and raised concerns of worker exploitation of working hours and lack of supervision. The incident quickly spread online, with many users calling the municipal administration inefficient and demanding a solution.

In the wake of the video’s circulation, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation went on an internal inquiry to verify the facts. Initial investigations showed that the employees involved were on duty at the time of the incident.

Since workers were employed by an outsourcing agency, the corporation told the contractor to terminate their services immediately.

Apart from dismissing the two outsourced employees, the civic body also suspended the sanitary supervisor responsible for monitoring the workers. The supervisor failed to follow the rules of discipline and oversight and caused the problem, officials said.

Public servants and outsourced staff are expected to be professional in their duties, municipal officials stressed. Any breach of service norms, they said, would result in severe consequences, no matter where you are in the employment chain.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing role of social media in exposing workplace misconduct. Viral videos have frequently triggered quick administrative responses, particularly when it comes to government departments and public services.

A growing number of local government departments and public services have adopted internal investigations following such incidents online.

Residents of Chandigarh were divided on the action by the Municipal Corporation. The dismissals and suspension were welcomed by some as part of a system of accountability; others urged the administration to address the broader issues of sanitation services as they relate to worker training, supervision, and working conditions.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is committed to the enhancement of public service delivery and professional practices of all municipal employees. Any failure to behave and act properly will be dealt with firmly, officials said.

The episode is a good wake-up call to public officials and civic workers about the increased sensitivity of society in the age of smartphones and social media. Many times, workplace conduct gets caught up in a media storm, leading to disciplinary action and reputational damage to their jobs and government.

The Municipal Corporation will review its supervisory system and enhance monitoring practices after this inquiry to prevent similar incidents in the future. The action taken will help with discipline and restore the confidence of Chandigarh residents in Chandigarh's civic services, the administration says.
